WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR
The Club for UNESCO in Genoa dedicates a reflection on World Day against Child Labour 2020.
Children around the world are regularly engaged in paid forms of work and not that they are much harmful to them.
Child labor is classified as such when so-called underage workers are too young for physical work or are involved in dangerous activities that can undermine their physical, mental, social or educational development. In less developed countries, little more than one in four children (ages 5 to 17) is engaged in a job that is considered harmful to health and development.
Africa has the highest percentage among the regions of the world both in the percentage of children engaged in child labour - one fifth - and in the absolute number of children employed-72 million.
Asia and the Pacific are second in both rankings: 7 % of all children and 62 million in absolute terms are employed in child labour in this region.
Africa, Asia and Pacific regions together represent nearly nine out of ten children in the world of child labour.
The remaining child population is divided between the Americas (11 million), Europe and Central Asia (6 million) and Arab States (1 million).
In terms of incidence, 5 % of children do child work in the Americas, 4 % in Europe and Central Asia and 3 % in Arab States. While the percentage of children in child labour is higher in low-income countries, their numbers are actually higher in middle-income countries. In fact, 9 % of all children in middle-low-income countries, and 7 % of all children in middle-income countries, do child labour.
Statistics on the absolute number of children in child labour in each national income group indicate that 84 million children in child labour, representing 56 % of all those who work at risk, actually live in countries Medium income and another 2 million live in high-income countries.
Extraordinarily current data to ponder!
