Davis, πρ.

B. Davis, όσο και ο κ.

Η. Hudak.

YANNICK NÉZET-SÉGUIN CONDUCTS HIS FIRST SALOME AT THE OPERA DE MONTREAL

The Opera de Montreal presented the masterpiece opera Salome by Richard Strauss.

The music of Strauss is influenced by Wagner in the more complicated manners.

The characters as presented by Strauss, and his German libretto after the famous play of Oscar Wilde, they seems to be in a cave with snakes. Everything is frightening as the romanticism itself.

The conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin did a wonderful job, the tempi were slower but the sound penetrated velvet and thick, surprisely dominated by the strings. All the orchestra gave the impression of an enormous violoncello.

The fine casting gave justice to the characters. Judith Forst as Herodias was impressive and mature. John Mac Master as Herod sang with all his emotion for Salome, and keeps the balance with his people. Robert Hayward as Jokanaan wasn’t good, his dry voice and the appearance as he was presented gave a feeling toward aversion.

Nicola Beller Carbone as Salome was more actress than a singer for this role. She looks beautiful on stage and girlish. I didn’t hear the low notes especially in the finale’s big part. Also I have always in my mind Nilsson’s great vocal explosion in the final lines of the opera. I didn’t expect to hear a voice not even close to Nilsson tonight. Furthermore Nicola Beller Carbone did sang well with worm vibrato and soul.

Costumes and scenery were ridiculous, in the modern style that audience most of them conservatives old fashion complained at the corridors of Place des Arts, with stories of the old good period that costumes was historically correct. I had a nice evening at the Opera de Montreal. I wish a continuous success.

Hiromi Maruoka: Upon the earthquake disaster in Japan

Tokyo, Japan. Hiromi Maruoka
Director, Pacific Basin Arts Communication (PARC)
Japan Center
An earthquake is a natural phenomenon, but man-made disasters accompany it. Especially, I take the accident of the nuclear power plants seriously as an incident on a different level, not only because of the scale and nature of the disaster, but also because the fact that we tried to control nature and to make the maximum use of nature, of which results were pollution beyond the nature's ability of self-preservation and a crisis of the condition of human beings' survival, is directly related to the conditions of society and art.

As far as I know, at least among Japanese and European performing arts professionals, in recent years, concerns about reduction of public support for art due to the economic crisis and political reactionism have been shared, and such the
mes as the raison d'être of art or what art can do have been discussed. I do not intend to express doubt about the necessity of these discussions at all, but I think there are assumptions that art might not be able to survive or that we might not be able to explain why art should exist if art cannot do anything are in the background of these questions. What I would like to say here is, as a number of forerunners have said, that art always exists no matter how bad situations are. What art can do or to what art can contribute are not questions about the condition of art but questions about what benefits society can draw from art. I would like to reaffirm again here that art itself always exists and the fact that art exists as art is enough for art.

In Japan, currently, it seems that a lot of people are claiming through mass media that "mental care" is important. They say "mental care" is needed for the victims of the earthquake as well as "excessive fear" of radioactivity. What if art is incorporated into this? Society and art will be in harmony without contradiction, and a whole will be constituted. Art will obtain its raison d'être and mission. However, if a society
in which art functions only in that way is formed, it is a society that recognizes only "mental" pain when it causes pollution beyond the nature's ability of self-preservation and a crisis of the condition of human beings' survival.

I had been thinking that it is impossible to keep forever the living standard, which used to be taken for granted in Japan until the earthquake or probably until a few years ago. My attempt about that in the last decade was just to live witho
ut a refrigerator, air conditioner, and TV. I do not think this small personal attempt gives me any certification to say anything, but what I have understood is that it is important not only to consume less but also to re-question the preconditions. And if I have to dare to say what art can do, I would say that art can re-question the preconditions, and can do that in a thoroughgoing way.

Art can re-question the preconditions in a thoroughgoing way because it is absolutely outside of society. Sometimes an act of trying to be absolutely outside of society results in thoroughgoing re-questioning of the preconditions. Sometimes an act of thoroughgoing re-questioning of the preconditions results in being absolutely expelled from society. Anyway, I think that the profession loosely defined by the term "arts manager" is about sending back this outside to society and reconsidering every precondition through art to redefine "benefit" of society.

Society cannot continue to exist without renewing itself, but an opportunity to renew itself does not exist inside society itself. It seems that society rarely explicitly expresses necessity of art, because society tends to behave as if it is autonomously sufficient, in other words, as if it does not need outside. However, fundamentally, society needs art for its own survival. I think our work is to clarify this.

Although aftershocks have been continuing and we do not really feel safe yet, the earthquake itself has somehow settled, and efforts to recover have begun. However, the accident of the nuclear power plants is ongoing, and the most immediate victims of it are the victims of the earthquake. The accident of the nuclear power plants, whether it settles or results in the worst scenario, obliges not only recovery but also renewal of society. As a sheer member of this society, which has created the condition of the possibility of this incident, and as an arts manager, I feel that I am questioned how to renew this society now.

SALOME by Richard Strauss from The Opéra de Montréal

YANNICK NÉZET-SÉGUIN CONDUCTS HIS FIRST SALOME

SING FOR ME, SALOME!

The Opéra de Montréal's 31st season continues with one of the most enduring works in the 20th century opera repertoire: Salome by Richard Strauss. Performances on March 19, 23, 26, 28, and 31, 2011 at 8 pm, in Salle Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts. Bringing to life all the colours of this dazzling score is one of today's most outstanding conductors, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who will be conducting this work for the very first time in his career. After triumphing on podiums in Europe and America, from the Salzburg Festival to the Metropolitan in New York, the "prodigy" returns to the Opéra de Montréal, leading "his" Orchestre Métropolitain. An Opera Theatre of St. Louis San Francisco Opera Opéra de Montréal co-production.

Portraying the cruel princess Salome is a specialist in the role, Nicola Beller Carbone, who has performed Salome on several major European stages. While in the past certain divas called for a stand-in to perform the mythical "dance of the seven veils," Nicola Beller Carbone uses her impeccable physique to great advantage and fully takes on the role! Alongside her, British baritone Robert Hayward makes his company debut in the role of the prophet. Taking on the other main roles are sure-fire stars of the Canadian opera stage: legendary mezzo Judith Forst showcases her extensive experience in the role of the odious Herodias, performing alongside John Mac Master as Herod. Stage director Seán Curran is also a choreographer, a very useful asset for a work such as this, which includes a dance scene that is of capital importance. He will bring the characters to life in sets and costumes by Bruno Schwengl, under Paul Palazzo's lighting.

THE MOST DELERIOUS OF IMPULSES

"But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company, and she pleased Herod so much that he promised on oath to grant her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, 'Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.'" (Matthew 14: 3-11)

This episode from the Bible, which had inspired one of Gustave Flaubert's Three Tales, also gave Oscar Wilde the idea to write a French play on the subject, which Sarah Bernhardt would premiere in London¼ The event did not take place but Richard Strauss took Wilde's work and set it to a score whose intensity had rarely been equalled in the history of music. To the sound of an orchestra driven to the frenzied peak of its abilities, characters in a trance-like state give in to their wildest impulses.

At the end of the incredible "Dance of the Seven Veils,"†a blend of oriental rhythms and Viennese waltz†Salome, the cruel and seductive spoiled child, finally gets her toy: Jokanaan's head, whose lips she gluttonously kisses. Death is everywhere, on stage and off: the soldier, Narraboth, commits suicide before Salome's indifferent eyes, Jokanaan is decapitated, Salome herself ends up crushed beneath the shields of Herod's soldiers.

A STRIPTEASE AT THE OPERA

At the opera's premiere in Dresden in 1905, the ecstatic audience called the artists out for 38 curtain calls! A "succès de scandale" but a success nonetheless, which was repeated in Berlin, Milan, Turin, and New York†despite the efforts of censors and moralists who tried their best to prohibit such a incendiary work.

The work provoked admiration and perplexity from Strauss's colleagues. French composer Gabriel Fauré spoke of "cruel dissonances that defy all explanation." But singers let themselves be tempted by a chance to portray this Lolita-like character†Salome is supposed to be just 16 years old†with a Wagnerian voice, even though it required them to dance and to make themselves heard over a raging orchestra.

Historical Lessons

By Metropolitan Sotirios

T

he over one- thousand year life span and the crowning achievements at the zenith of glory of the Byzantine Empire, was the creation and the result of the joining together of the Hellenic spirit and thought baptized by Christian truth and teaching. What made this possible, of course, was the excellent administrative and management skills that the Roman Empire had taught the world.

Some will disagree with my opinion and position on this, but this is their concern. This does not exclude, of course, any discussion or debate on this issue in good faith.
Each decline or bankruptcy comes about primarily due to a moral collapse and decline, which always comes first. Any other decline or collapse necessarily follows the moral and ethical decline, whether it is political, administrative, financial and so on. The same thing happened in the
Byzantine Empire.

As long as its citizens – the people, the administration and the Church – upheld and lived their lives in an ethical and principled manner, the Empire progressed and achieved great accomplishments. When its people abandoned their moral and ethical principles along with their spiritual values, they were impoverished both spiritually and materially, and then the Byzantine Empire went into decline and ultimately collapsed. It is not possible in this Encyclical, due to limitations of time and space, to expand into details.

In the four hundred years of Ottoman slavery, where almost everything was taken away from our people - especially the pursuit of freedom - the conscience of the people was awakened. They returned once more to their moral principles and values. They were strengthened and became mighty spiritually, and they took the heroic decision to sacrifice themselves "for their country, their family and for the Holy Faith in Christ.”

They fought and they won due to their spiritual strength, and not simply by their military arms, which in reality hardly existed. When comparing the military hardware on both sides, the struggle was certainly unequal. The enemy surpassed them in military might. But conversely, on the basis of spiritual fortitude, the race was again uneven. The enemy was aged and spiritually paralyzed. Thus, the outcome of the military campaign was ultimately based upon the spiritual strength and fortitude of the Hellenic freedom fighters.

The declaration of the revolution of 1821 and the righteousness of the struggle for independence, is an historic watershed - not only for Greeks but for all mankind. And not only is it an historical watershed in history, but it is also an eternal lesson. Those who sincerely want to learn, will learn that the ethical and moral crisis brings after it, every other kind of crisis and decline.

But the historical lesson continues. During the years of the Greek revolution, the discord between the leaders of the revolution brought them many times to the brink of disaster, and threatened the very existence of the victorious revolution.

After the victory of the revolution of 1821, we have historical events and periods in Greek history that were sometimes bright and at other times dark. The greatest historical mistake of the past was the dispute between the King and Venizelos, which resulted in the debacle of the Asia Minor Disaster. Another example of similar discord can be observed with the Greeks in World War II, which ultimately brought about the Greek Civil War. In both examples, moral and ethical principles were in decline, and this resulted in catastrophe.

Today, Greece - which could have existed on a much higher plateau than the ancient epochs of glory as well as in the Byzantine era - so that it might shine and illuminate the whole world and be praised by the whole world, is instead going through a terrible finanical crisis. The causes of this economic crisis is the relinquishing of moral principles and values. Without morals and values, there can be no good governance and management. And the result, with mathematical precision, is destruction. However, we know that "Greece never dies." It will overcome this terrible economic crisis and it will again rise in glorious accomplishments, as it did before, and will shine again and in perpetuity with its ancient splendour and glory. Nobody should be disheartened. Everyone must be optimistic and to work together for the glory of Greece.

We live in Canada. As Greeks, we are the descendants of our forefathers: the ancient Greeks, the Byzantine Greeks; and the off-spring of Modern Greece. We are blessed to be the inheritors of the glory of ancient Greece and Christian culture, and we partake of their moral principles and values. When we firmly maintain and uphold these moral values and principles, we manage ourselves properly, along with our institutions.

Celebrating our national anniversary of March 25th 1821 again this year, I urge us all to stand on guard at the ramparts. Let us stand on guard to maintain our moral principles and the values of our people and our Orthodox faith. Only then will we be worthy descendants of our heroic ancestors. We will then honour them properly. We can then partake worthily of the glory of ancient Greece, the Byzantine Empire, and the revolution of 1821. We will then truly savour and enjoy freedom. We will truly succeed in our endeavours. We will be an example for those around us. Our ancestors will also be proud of us.

Living and rejoicing in this union of the Greek and Christian spirits, let us continue on our up-ward course on earth, culminating in eternity and the inheritance of Kingdom of God, basking in eternal happiness in the arms of our Loving God.

Long live March 25th 1821! Long live Greece! Long live Canada! Long live freedom!

With fatherly love and fervent prayers,

+ Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios of Toronto (Canada)

Η
