The Violin in Makam Music with Danai Loukidi

This course will cover the fundamentals of violin technique in Turkish makam. We will work on exercises for left and right hand techniques, focusing on ornamentation and articulation. We will use classical Ottoman pieces, as well as traditional Turkish and Greek pieces to study the makam system, concentrating on the intervals, articulation and phrasing basics. We will study the Hicaz family, Nikriz and Neveser makamlar, analyzing the melodic development of these in the selected repertoire. We will also study the rhythmic elements of these pieces, and you will become familiar with several time signatures of the Eastern Mediterranean region.

This course is for students who already play violin, are able to hold and tune the instrument, and clearly produce sound and scales. By the end of this course, you will be familiar with the fundamental elements of makam theory. You will also grasp their direct correlation with performance in order to become creative beyond the score.
The course repertoire will include the following pieces, with potential for slight change: “Hicaz Ilahi,” “Neratzolemono,” "Hicaz Humayun Peşrev" by Veli Dede, "Pervolaria," “To kofton” from Cyprus, “Nikriz Peşrev” by Ali Ufki Bey, and “Neveser Şarkı.”
