Edinburgh-born Colin Currie is one of the world’s greatest percussionists, as revered for his gripping power as he is for his remarkable refinement. Finnish visionary composer Einojuhani Rautavaara wrote his magical, mystical percussion concerto ‘Incantations’ for Currie in 2008: it’s a shaman’s dance, blending blistering virtuosity and unearthly luminosity – just the thing to showcase Currie’s exceptional talents.
Scotland’s pre-eminent composer Sir James MacMillan conducts the Scottish premiere of his short memorial lament Ein Lämplein verlosch. Written in 2018, ‘A little lamp went out’ takes its inspiration from Mahler’s tragic Kindertotenlieder in music of shimmering beauty.
The incidental music that Jean Sibelius wrote for a 1926 staging of The Tempest in Copenhagen is so rich and vivid that it’s been dubbed the opera that the composer never wrote. The second suite brings together evocative vignettes shining a bright light on characters and scenes from Shakespeare’s final play.
