José Antonio Abreu Anselmi, Venezuelan musician, economist, politician, activist and educator

 


On May 7, 1939, he was born in Valera, Trujillo State, (Venezuela), José Antonio Abreu Anselmi, Venezuelan musician, economist, politician, activist and educator. He founded the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and the National System of Orchestras and Juveniles and Children's Choirs of Venezuela.

Teacher José Antonio Abreu is an icon of love and work in Venezuela, has changed the lives of thousands of children with El Sistema, an educational model that since 1975 and through music instills values of respect and solidarity in the more than 500 thousand children and young people who today make up the National System of Orchestras and Juvenile Choirs and Children of Venezuela, and that each day are constituted in the national banner at the international level.
Abreu began his musical studies in Barquisimeto; in 1957 he was based in Caracas, where he studied piano at the Academy of Musical Declamation of Caracas, then organ, harpsichord and composition at the Jose Angel Lamas College of Music, from which he graduated as Executive Professor, Master Composer and Orchestral Director.
The priceless value of Master Abreu echoes in several countries; his work has earned him the distinction of several Honoris Causes Doctorates in prestigious universities, as well as a number of awards. Highlights by UNESCO and UNICEF: International BMI-UNESCO Music Award for The System (1993); Ambassador to the Special Mission for the Development of a Global Network of Youth and Children Orchestras and Choirs and Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations UNESCO (1995 and 1998); participates in the ′′ 25 Leaders, 25 Voices for Children ′′ campaign of the UNICEF Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (2014).
