Dynamic Duos of Minimalism: When Panagiotis Karousos Met Philip Glass in Montreal

In March 2000, the vibrant cultural hub of Montreal became the backdrop for a historic musical convergence. Panagiotis Karousos, the acclaimed Greek-Canadian classical composer known for his sweeping lyricism and operatic works, met face-to-face with Philip Glass, the legendary American master of minimalism.

At the time, alongside his career as a composer, Karousos served as an art critic for the Montreal newspaper Tachydromos (\(\text{T}\alpha\chi\upsilon\delta\rho\text{ó}\mu\text{o}\varsigma\)). It was in this journalistic role that he covered the entire festival and penned an exclusive feature article, enriched by direct interviews with Philip Glass and impresario Mario Labbé.
The meeting took place during the highly anticipated "L'Événement Glass" festival, a three-day celebration curated by legendary Montreal producer François Mario Labbé, founder of Analekta—Canada’s largest and most reputable independent classical record label.
A Cross-Cultural Exchange: From Skalkottas to Minimalism
Beyond his duties as a journalist, Karousos shared a profound artistic connection with Glass. During their conversations at the press conference table, Glass found himself highly intrigued by Karousos's background and his rich Greek heritage. Curious to explore the melodic foundations of Mediterranean music, Glass explicitly requested traditional Greek music scores from Karousos to study further. In response, Karousos referred him to the brilliant suites of Nikos Skalkottas's Greek Dances, bridging the gap between classical Greek modernism and the American avant-garde.
In return, Karousos received invaluable, firsthand technical advice from the American master. By covering the festival events from the front rows for his newspaper, he closely analyzed Glass's use of repetitive structures and his distinct management of shifting instrumental layers.
The Birth of "Liberty" and a Standing Ovation
This direct mentorship left an indelible mark on Karousos's evolving stylistic identity. Inspired by the hypnotic textures of the Philip Glass Ensemble, he learned to integrate elements of minimalist style and unique harmonic idioms within massive classical structures—an influence that directly shaped the orchestration of his Symphony No. 1 "Liberty".
The piece was first presented to the public under the title Symphonic Poem "Esprit de Liberté" (Spirit of Liberty). This historic premiere took place inside the breathtaking, resonant architecture of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church, brought to life by the Symphony Orchestra des Jeunes Laval-Laurentides under the precise baton of Maestro André Gauthier.
Attended by former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau as the guest of honor, the premiere was met with excellent critical acclaim and earned a passionate standing ovation from the audience.
Glass's Choral Vision Realized at Place des Arts
Following a specific structural proposal made by Philip Glass during their interviews, Karousos chose to expand the sonic boundaries of his symphony by integrating vocal textures. Glass had suggested adding a chorus to enrich the monumental work, which Karousos executed for its next major evolution.
On March 25, 2002, this grander, choral iteration of the Liberty Symphony made its triumphant debut at the prestigious Place des Arts Theatre Maisonneuve. Performed once again by the Symphony Orchestra des Jeunes Laval-Laurentides, the orchestra was joined on stage by the Choeur Chanterelle du Collège Laval, under the rigorous direction of chorus master Frédéric Vogel. Enhanced by these powerful voices and driving minimalist idioms, the performance solidified the lasting impact of the Karousos-Glass mentorship in Canadian classical music.

A Three-Day Journey into Sonic Minimalism
In his original newspaper review, Karousos highlighted the exceptional fusion of repetitive music and repertory cinema that characterized Analekta's event at Place des Arts. The festival featured three landmark film projections with the scores performed live by Glass himself at the keyboards:
  • Day 1: Koyaanisqatsi, Godfrey Reggio’s spectacular, frantic visual masterpiece (produced by Francis Ford Coppola).
  • Day 2: Powaqqatsi, a driving, rhythmic global tapestry (produced by Coppola and George Lucas).
  • Day 3: The world premiere of Anima Mundi, a striking short film celebrating the interconnected breath of nature.
The historical article published by Karousos in Tachydromos remains a precious testament to an era when Montreal asserted itself as a crossroads for global classical innovation—immortalizing the exact moment where Greek lyricism met the mathematical spirit of American minimalism.
