The epic 5-hour unveiling of the full Sounds of Percussion album, featuring musicians and footage worldwide in Tokyo, New York City, Los Angeles, Rome, and more!
Sounds of Percussion is an album composed by Tatsuya (Tats) Daniel, a physics PhD candidate at Brown University in the USA and a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The album consists of 11 pieces and is 54 minutes long. It features a wide range of percussion instruments, from chromatic instruments (such as marimba, vibraphone, and glockenspiel), battery instruments (such as snare drum, bass drum, and cymbals), hand percussion (such as congas and bongos), to smaller auxiliary percussion instruments (such as triangle and tambourine).
Additionally, the instrumentation includes a rhythm section (piano, keyboard, drums, electric bass, acoustic and electric guitar), as well as body percussion (hand clapping, finger snapping and foot stomping). The album was recorded (both audio and video) by 23 musicians across the United States and Japan during the pandemic.
Along with the 11 album pieces, the premiere will feature works that members of the MIT Wind Ensemble percussion section worked on during the pandemic. There will also be appearances by musicians and future collaborators in Nigeria, Portugal, Ghana, India, South Africa, Malaysia, Uganda, and Botswana!
The concert has been entirely pre-recorded and will be streamed on YouTube. The entire stream will be available after the event for those who can't join live because of the time difference and for those who want to relive the premiere afterwards!
