Opera Aficionado: Roots of Russian Opera

It started in the 1700s. Russia was rapidly Westernizing, abandoning feudal traditions in favor of the art, styles and intellectual trends of the Enlightenment.
The Russian court became increasingly occupied by foreigners. And those foreigners brought with them a taste — for opera.
French opera, Italian opera, German opera, it all came flooding into Russia's borders. But it was only in the 1800s that Russia's native talent began to produce opera of its own.
Go on a journey back in time with our latest Opera Aficionado event, "Roots of Russian Opera," led by music theory professor Alla Gladysheva.
She'll introduce you to works from composers like Mikhail Glinka, considered one of the earliest fonts of distinctly Russian opera.
It was the start of a heralded tradition of Russian opera that continues to this day.
Opera Aficionado is a live, interactive conversation series, held every Sunday online. Explore the roots of Russian opera in this special event: https://sfopera.com/.../community-programs/aficionado/
