Fair to Midler: Ruthless People & Down and Out in Beverly Hills

This month, whether you asked for it or not, we present our tribute to the ‘Divine Miss M.’ with two laff-filled tales sprung from the ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Feckless.’

First up – it’s the screwball wife-napping caper RUTHLESS PEOPLE (1986). Brought to you by the Abrams/Zucker Bros. team, it concerns the shenanigans of scumbag millionaire ‘spandex king’ Sam Stone (Danny DeVito), who planned to murder his wife (Bette) until a hapless young couple (Judge Reinhold and Helen Slater) take her off his hands in a would-be revenge/blackmail scheme. Meanwhile, Stone’s mistress and her addle-brained thug boyfriend (Bill Pullman) hatch their own get-rich-quick scheme. Needless to say, things get deliciously out-of-hand and you’ll be tapping your feet to the Mick Jagger-goes-‘80s theme tune.
Then it’s Paul Mazursky’s nouveau-riche moral folly DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS (1986), concerning what happens when another obnoxious rich garment couple the Whitemans (Richard Dreyfuss and Bette) take a suicidal homeless drifter (Nick Nolte) under their wing to ‘rehabilitate’ him. We soon find out ‘Who’s Zooming Who’ as Nolte gets to the core of the household dysfunction, including greed, adultery and a badly behaved canine. You can feel sophisticated knowing it’s a remake of a French film and if you get bored, Little Richard is their neighbor!
So come on out to enjoy this double comedic whammy of ‘people screwing people,’ brought to you on 1986 VHS as we do. Tell ‘em Bette sent me! As always, Freddy’s Happy Hour and trivia/prizes will be served.
Please note: as of Aug 16 by NYS & NYC mandate, Proof of vax (card or pass) is required of all guests at Freddy's so don't be a no-goodnik.
