Victor Hugo's work gave Giuseppe Verdi two immortal titles: 'Ernani' and 'Rigoletto'. The first, a lyrical drama based on the play 'Hernani' of 1830, had an enormous appeal for Verdi — he thought that in this play "everything is good theatre" and defined it as "Romanticism in Literature". The opera came to Portugal and the Teatro de São Carlos on January 1, 1845. The title remained immensely popular and has had some notable performers over more than 170 years of performances. Gregory Kunde will play June 14, 16, 18 and 20 the title role in concert version.
