WHAT IS AN EXCOMUSEUM?

The term ecomuseo means a territory characterized by traditional living environments, particularly relevant naturalistic and historical and artistic heritage and worthy of protection, restoration and valorization. It can also be said that the widespread museum belongs to the community, that it is the ecomuseum.

The Ecomuseo, therefore being conceived as a ′′ mirror ′′ of the past and ′′ construction site ′′ for the future, is a dynamic process in close relationship with the local community, and therefore likely to increase and also major changes that go likewise step with changes within the reference community.

For this reason when we talk about ecomuseo, we don't want to talk about physical concreteization, a setup, but rather about the birth and development of a PROCESS that necessarily involves the involvement of a number of different actors: local authorities, the associationism, research institutes, economic realities, school. Ecomuseums are therefore paths of cultural growth for local, creative and inclusive communities, founded on the active participation of the inhabitants and the collaboration of bodies and associations.

Therefore, the Ecomuseo promotes collective uses and knowledge to avoid its dispersion and ensure the existence of diversity of lifestyles and more sustainable cultures, through the active participation of the population.

HIS SIGNIFIED

We can say, however, that there is no unique definition of an ecomuseum, from its first definition to the end of the 70 s to date, many have been coined. We can talk about a dynamic, ever-changing concept.

There is definitely G.H. Rivi ère's best-known definitions:

An ecomuse is a mirror in which this population looks at themselves, to recognize themselves, searching for the explanation of the territory to which it belongs, together with those populations that preceded it, in discontinuity or continuity of generations. A mirror that this population offers to their guests, to make themselves better understood, respecting their job, their behaviors, their intimacy.

In Italy, a particular fortune has had, the coined definition of Maurizio Maggi:

The ecomuse is a pact with which a community is committed to taking care of its territory. An informal pact, not a set of rules that force or prohibit something, but rather an unwritten and shared agreement between local community members and the institutions. The aim of this pact is to preserve but also to use, for today and for the future, the cultural heritage of the territory, understood not only in a physical sense, but also as a history of the population living there and of the material and intangible signs left behind from those who have lived it in the past.
