MOZART & JANACEK Virtual Concert

SINFONIA BEATS THE LOCKDOWN WITH 'MOZART & JANACEK'

Sinfonia Toronto’s January 21 concert will celebrate Mozart just six days before his 266th birthday. Continuing the orchestra's January tradition of pairing Mozart with another composer, this year's concert is titled MOZART & JANACEK. It will take place as a livestream on the 21st and the concert video will remain accessible online for four more weeks. The eloquent young Toronto pianist Artun Miskciyan will be featured in one of Mozart's most beautiful piano concertos, his No. 22 in E-flat Major. Maestro Nurhan Arman will conduct Janacek's passionate, folk-inspired Suite and his own orchestral arrangement of the D Major String Quartet by Mozart's brilliant contemporary Joseph Bologne.
Looking forward to January 21, Maestro Arman commented, "Once again we find ourselves in a lockdown. Throughout the pandemic we haven't retreated, we have actually increased our activity, with virtual concerts for students and long-term care residents as well as online listeners all over Canada. Whenever possible we have continued bringing our core musicians together. So we'll celebrate Mozart this month with a livestream, which is the next best thing to having listeners with us in the concert hall. During times of crisis people need music and the all the arts more than ever."
Pianist Artun Miskciyan studied at Mimar Sinan State Conservatory in Istanbul and continued his education in Toronto with Marietta Orlov at the Royal Conservatory and Jamie Parker at the University of Toronto. He has participated in masterclasses with James Anagnoson, David Louie and John Perry, and has won prizes at the Pera International Piano Competition, National Chopin Piano Competition in Turkey and the AmiCa Fest Concerto Competition in Italy.
Now in its 23rd season, Sinfonia Toronto has received glowing reviews on tour in Europe, the US, South America and China. It has released four CD’s, including a JUNO winner, and performs throughout Ontario. Its extensive repertoire includes all the major string orchestra works of the 18th through 21st centuries, and it has premiered many new works. Under the baton of Nurhan Arman the orchestra’s performances present outstanding international guest artists and prominent Canadian musicians.
Nurhan Arman has conducted in 24 countries in Europe, Asia, South America, Canada and the US, returning regularly to many orchestras in Europe. Among the orchestras Maestro Arman has conducted are the Moscow Philharmonic, Deutsches Kammerorchester Frankfurt, Filarmonica Italiana, St. Petersburg State Hermitage Orchestra, Orchestre Regional d’Ile de France, Hungarian State Symphony, Arpeggione Kammerorchester, Milano Classica and Belgrade Philharmonic.
