“Artwork of Byzantium and Neighboring Countries: Parallels, Influences, or Interpretations?”

For many centuries, Byzantine art interacted with the artistic traditions of neighboring countries. In some cases, it was a mutual enrichment, movement in one direction; in other cases, it was an influence, imitation, or interpretation; sometimes, it was a transfer of the Byzantine tradition to a new ground and its further independent development. Looking at the paintings of the Christian East, Italy, Ancient Russia, and the medieval Balkans, we will try to clarify their relations with Byzantine art.

Discussers of “Artwork of Byzantium and Neighboring Countries: Parallels, Influences, or Interpretations?”: Anna Zakharova (State Institute for Art Studies, Moscow State University), Svetlana Maltseva (St. Petersburg State University), and Vitaliy Suslenkov (Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox University of Humanities).
