16 years ago, the orchestra and choir played a series of concerts that presented the groups created by Teodor Currentzis. We asked the musicians to share their memories of musicAeterna’s start and first rehearsals. This one is from the chief chorus master Vitaly Polonsky:
“At that time I mostly sang myself: as a chorus master, I was just helping Vyacheslav Podyelsky (chorus master of the New Siberian Singers) to rehearse some parts and programmes.
When we started to rehearse a selection from Mozart’s Requiem, we did feel intriguied. But none of us could even imagine what it would result in: perhaps Teodor was the only one who understood it was the beginning of a long journey. We just enjoyed every minute of working with him and a new sensation of music: its dimensions that were suddenly revealed, the construction of phrases, the relation to it. We were so immersed in creating that we didn’t think about where it would lead us. Teodor said: ‘Guys, we will go on stage with Cecilia Bartoli and Le Poème Harmonique...’ Then I was quite skeptical of such plans, I did not believe that it was possible.
The programme of that concert was diverse: from the Requiem, music by Bach, Couperin, Cavalieri, and Purcell to works by Beethoven, Brahms, Ives and, finally, Pärt. I think, Teodor wanted our audience to get acquainted with the repertoire that musicAeterna would present in the future. Overall, it was a truly happy time, comparable to the feelings of the main character of the The Glass Bead Game: you go to the lesson with one attitude, and after the lesson the world and its perception have already changed.”
