Fedor Lednev, conductor, Teodor Currentzis’ assistant:
— Ravel’s and Debussy’s world of sound (by the way, they are very unlike, although both are French impressionists) is radically different from what Stravinsky does at the beginning of his neoclassical period. He adresses the 18th century style with its distinctive baroque lucidity, gallant arias, imagery and dissects it as a 20th century master, using modern instruments, modern timbres and approaches to orchestration. The programme is very diverse: in its style, themes, mood, and way each of the composers works with sound. Listening to it, you can draw many parallels, but find even more contrasts.
