"Science & Orthodoxy around the World (SOW)"
“The Science and Orthodox Christianity relationship: past-present-future"

3rd International Conference
“The Science and Orthodox Christianity relationship: past-present-future"
Athens,November 29 - December 1, 2018 | National Hellenic Research Foundation

The third international conference concludes a three-year effort by Project SOW to map and help advance the ongoing discussion on science and Orthodox Christianity throughout the world. Intensive research, long hours of discussions in conferences and workshops, many hours of filmed and recorded interviews, revealed a number of important thematic areas where the discussion is more vibrant, highlighting controversial yet fruitful aspects of the science-religion relationship. Among these areas are bioethics, ecology and environment, physics and cosmology, psychology- psychoanalysis, which also seem to open new perspectives in the future discussion. Furthermore, philosophy, together with a historical overview of the relationship in the past, appears to be crucial in the understanding of the current science-Orthodoxy relationship, and unlock aspects of its future. This, however, would be incomplete without the exchange of fundamental viewpoints between the Orthodox world and components of the ongoing discussion in the West.
Bioethics pose important questions on the Human essence that directly touch upon daily societal aspects and institutions, and questions arise whether Orthodox theology and spirituality can offer an inclusive approach to ecological issues and a roadmap for Humankind's interaction with nature. On the other hand, psychoanalysis faces today new challenges from neuroscience and technology, while contemporary Orthodox theology has formulated and put forward a relational spirituality promoting real selves and meaningful bond with others and God. Both developments seem to have brought closer the two domains and made them more susceptible to a creative dialogue. But where does the future of this amazing relationship lie? How can we help advance the discussion to actually make a difference in society? Can philosophy prove to be a valuable tool that towards this direction?
These and other major issues will be tackled during the conference, in an effort to identify problems, pose questions, and propose long-awaited answers on the nature of the science-religion relationship among Orthodox Christians today.

Day 3 of the Conference will be dedicated to the Psychology/Psychoanalysis relationship with Orthodox Theology.
