Thales Alenia Space’s EUTELSAT KONNECT VHTS will be launched on an Ariane 5 ECA by Arianespace on September 6, 2022 (TBD), with the launch of VA258. The satellite will be Europe's largest high-broadband satellite in geostationary orbit.
EUTELSAT KONNECT VHTS, a very high throughput satellite built by Thales Alenia Space, is to deliver high-speed broadband and mobile connectivity across Europe. With a Ka-band capacity of 500 Gbps, EUTELSAT KONNECT VHTS is the largest geostationary satellite ever ordered in Europe and will embark on the most powerful onboard digital processor, offering capacity allocation flexibility and optimal spectrum use.
This new-generation satellite, offering a capacity seven times that of its brother satellite EUTELSAT KONNECT launched in 2020, comes with several major firmly committed customers for satellite broadband connectivity, namely Orange via its Nordnet affiliate for the French coverage, Telecom Italia Mobile over Italy and Thales Alenia Space to serve notably the government connectivity services. These commitments showcase the ability of satellites to provide an attractive solution for bridging the digital divide at a time when access to connectivity plays a significant role in economic and social development.
The 6300 kg satellite will use Thales Alenia Space's new Spacebus-Neo-200 platform and will be launched in 2021. It will embark on the most potent onboard digital processor ever put in orbit, offering capacity allocation flexibility, optimal spectrum use, and progressive ground network deployment. Thales Alenia Space will also develop a satellite and ground segment solution.
The investment in KONNECT VHTS replaces the joint investment project with ViaSat in the ViaSat 3-EMEA satellite for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
The launch will represent Airianespace's 292nd mission and the 3rd mission for 2022. For the Ariane 5 rocket, it will be the 114th mission since the maiden flight and the 2nd mission for 2022.
The launch is scheduled for September 6, 5:45 p.m. EDT / 9:45 UTC / 23:45 CEST.
