Learn Musical Medleys: The Sound of Music & Les Miserables - COURSE LAUNCH

At SIC - Choir of the Earth we feel it's so important to enjoy our singing, and so we offer a wide range of courses to sing with one over-riding theme for everything: it’s all great music.

That's why we are delighted to offer you the chance to sing and record your own voice for a special SIC performance of medleys from beloved musicals, The Sound of Music and Les Misérables!
We present two medleys featuring songs from each musical. We also feature a welcome video from Claude-Michel Schönberg, composer of Les Misérables, who has honoured us with a personal comment to those of us who take part in the course!

👩🏼‍🏫 COURSE DIRECTOR
We are delighted to welcome Libby Crabtree as our brand new Course Director for SIC. Libby is in demand as an experienced director and conductor of large scale choral performances. She also directs chamber choirs, conducts high profile charity concerts in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, and leads workshops for The Sixteen’s Choral Pilgrimage programme.
Libby is ideally suited to run a musicals course as she performed for a year on London’s West End (Return to the Forbidden Planet), where she was also Assistant Musical Director. In addition, she has appeared on TV and toured nationally with a jazz cabaret group, performing original material and Broadway show songs.

📅 HOW IT WORKS & TIMINGS
The course launches with an open session, which is free for everybody to attend, on Monday 9th August at 17:00 BST. Over the following two weeks, Libby will then teach the medleys in hour-long sessions for each voice part, with a full choir sing-through at the end of each week. The Sound of Music medley will be taught in week 1, and Les Mis in week 2.
All sessions take place live on YouTube and are recorded. This means that, if the timing isn't right for you, you can simply watch it later at a time that suits you. Or if there's a tricky part you want to practise in more detail, you can watch the session back again as many time as you like, and even slow it down.
You will also have access to learning tracks recorded by Libby herself and prolific musician Ben Parry. These include tracks where you can hear your voice part louder than the others, to help you learn and gain confidence, as well as full-choir learning tracks, for those who want to find out if they can hold their own against the other parts.
At the end of the course, you will be invited to record your own voice for each medley - for as many voice parts as you like.
When it comes to recording, you will be sent conducting videos to help keep you on track. These use the "voice louder" tracks for your voice part, which best replicates the feeling of performing in the middle of your section, surrounded by your fellow sopranos / altos / tenors / basses.
After the deadline for vocal submissions, all of the recordings we've received will be sent to the mixing studio and, when our sound engineers have worked their magic to create a virtual choir, you will be invited to an online concert premiere on 9th October.
Our rehearsals and concerts all take place via live sessions on YouTube, meaning you can either go "full-screen" and focus purely on the high-quality teaching, or if you prefer you can interact with your fellow singers or ask SIC staff questions in the Live Chat. Our members find the SIC community fun, lively, supportive and enthusiastic about the music, so it is a great opportunity to chat with like-minded people and make wonderful new friends.
