The discussion is the closing event of apropos documenta, a Goethe-Institut project that run in Athens from October 2016 through September 2017. The invited speakers participated in one of the 'apropos' iterations, All: Collected Voices, an audio archive produced in collaboration with Radio Athènes institute for the advancement of contemporary visual culture, curated by Thomas Boutoux and Helena Papadopoulos. The archive consists of interviews, direct commissions and accidental encounters with artists, critics, gallerists, curators, writers and musicians assembled at a dedicated website conceived and designed by Dexter Sinister. All: Collected Voices was approached as a productive space of conflict in which unfinished and unpolished accounts on documenta 14, but also original soundworks, poetry readings and music unrelated to d14, produced parallel conversations.

In our attempt to continue to evaluate through the flow of words and the changes in voice what had/has been happening in Athens as site of collapse (of the indigenous and the foreign), of proposals (artistic and political), of drafts (of the past and for the future) Plädoyer der Jetztzeit (Call of the here-and-now) is a discussion in the form of a seminar that takes as its point of departure Walter Benjamin's use of the term "jetztzeit". In his Theses on the Philosophy of History, Benjamin describes a notion of time ripe with possibility, time at “zero-hour, poised, filled with energy and ready to take the "tiger's leap" into the future. However, this isn't naturally occurring but takes the intervention of the artist (or revolutionary) to produce it by "blasting" it free from the ceaseless flow in which it would otherwise be trapped.

Through their individual practice as curators, critics, writers and artists, Kirsty Bell, Anthony Huberman, Rallou Panagiotou, Helena Papadopoulos and Eva Stefani will reflect on "Time filled by the presence of the now" and the possibility (or impossibility) of a "tiger's leap".

Kirsty Bell is a critic and writer living in Berlin. She is the author of The Artist's House: From Workplace to Artwork (2013, Sternberg Press) and contributing editor to frieze, art agenda and Mousse magazine.

Anthony Huberman is a writer and curator based in San Francisco where he is director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts.

Rallou Panagiotou is an artist who splits her time between Glasgow and Athens. Her work has been featured in exhibitions internationally, including Tate Britain (2015), Glasgow International (2016), Signal (2017) and Radio Athènes (2016). She is represented by Bernier Eliades, Athens and Ibid, Los Angeles.

Helena Papadopoulos is a writer and curator, cofounder of Radio Athènes institute for the advancement of contemporary visual culture.

Eva Stefani is an artist and filmmaker living in Athens and Berlin. She is assistant professor of Cinema Studies at the University of Athens. Her work was recently featured in documenta 14.

Μια ανοιχτή συζήτηση με τους Kirsty Bell, Anthony Huberman, Ράλλου Παναγιώτου, Ελενα Παπαδοπούλου και Ευα Στεφανή.


Η συζήτηση αυτή είναι η τελευταία εκδήλωση του 'apropos documenta', ενος πρότζεκτ του Goethe-Institut που πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Αθήνα από τον Οκτώβριο του 2016 έως τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2017.

Οι προσκεκλημένοι ομιλητές συμμετείχαν στο 'All: Collected Voices', ένα σκέλος του 'apropos documenta' που έγινε σε συνεργασία με το Radio Athènes και επιμελήθηκε η Ελενα Παπαδοπούλου και ο Thomas Boutoux. Το αρχείο αποτελείται από συνεντεύξεις, άμεσες αναθέσεις και τυχαίες συναντήσεις με καλλιτέχνες, κριτικούς, γκαλερίστες, επιμελητές, συγγραφείς και μουσικούς που συλλέχθηκαν σε μια ειδική ιστοσελίδα σχεδιασμένη από τους Dexter Sinister.

Το 'All: Collected Voices' προσεγγίστηκε σαν ένας παραγωγικός χώρος σύγκρουσης στον οποίο αυθόρμητες σκέψεις γώρω απο την documenta 14, αλλά και πρωτότυπα ηχητικά έργα, αναγνώσεις ποίησης και περφορμανς που δεν σχετίζονταν με την d14, παρήγαγαν παράλληλες συνομιλίες.

Στην προσπάθειά μας να συνεχίσουμε να αξιολογούμε μέσω της ροής των λέξεων και των αλλαγών στον τόνο της φωνής τι συνέβη στην Αθήνα σαν τόπο επαφής (των αυτόχθονων και ξένων), των προτάσεων (καλλιτεχνικών και πολιτικών), της χαρτογράφησης (του παρελθόντος και του μέλλοντος), η συζήτηση -που θα έχει μορφή σεμιναρίου- έχει σαν αφετηρία τον όρο «jetztzeit» όπως τον χρησιμοποιεί ο Walter Benjamin στο κείμενο του Θέσεις για τη Φιλοσοφία της Ιστορίας (1940).

Ο Benjamin περιγράφει μια ιδέα του χρόνου που εγκυμονεί δυνατότητα, έναν χρόνο σε στάση, γεμάτο ενέργεια, έτοιμο να κάνει το 'άλμα της τίγρης' προς το μέλλον. Ωστόσο, αυτό δεν συμβαίνει με φυσικό τρόπο αλλά απαιτεί την παρέμβαση του καλλιτέχνη για να τον "εκτοξεύσει" και να τον απαλλάξει από την αδιάκοπη ροή στην οποία διαφορετικά θα παγιδευόταν.

Μέσα από την πρακτική τους ως επιμελητές, κριτικοί, συγγραφείς και καλλιτέχνες, οι Kirsty Bell, Anthony Huberman, Rallou Panagiotou, Helena Papadopoulos και Eva Stefani θα μιλήσουν γύρω απο την ιδέα ενος «Χρόνου γεμάτου από την παρουσία του τώρα» και την δυνατότητα (ή αδυνατότητα) ενός άλματος της «τίγρης».

Η Kirsty Bell είναι κριτικός και συγγραφέας που ζει στο Βερολίνο. Το βιβλίο της The Artist's House: Από το χώρο εργασίας στο έργο τέχνης εκδόθηκε το 2013 απο τον οίκο Sternberg Press. Είναι τακτική συνεργάτης του frieze, art agenda και Mousse.

Ο Anthony Huberman είναι επιμελητής, διευθυντής του Ινστιτούτου Σύγχρονης Τέχνης CCA Wattis στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο.

Η Ράλλου Παναγιώτου είναι καλλιτέχνις, ζει στη Γλασκώβη και την Αθήνα. Η δουλειά της έχει παρουσιαστεί σε διεθνή μουσεία και οργανισμούς, Tate Britain (2015), Glasgow International (2016), Signal (2017) και Radio Athènes (2016). Εκπροσωπείται από την γκαλερί Bernier Eliades, στην Αθήνα και την γκαλερί Ibid, στο Λος Άντζελες.

Η Ελενα Παπαδοπούλου είναι επιμελήτρια, ιδρύτρια του ινστιτούτου σύγχρονης τέχνης Radio Athènes.

Η Εύα Στεφανή είναι καλλιτέχνης και σκηνοθέτης, ζει στην Αθήνα και το Βερολίνο. Είναι επίκουρη καθηγήτρια κινηματογραφικών σπουδών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Η δουλειά της παρουσιάστηκε πρόσφατα στη Ντοκουμέντα 14.
