Dec 3-World Disability Day: Leave No One behind
I welcome with great commitment and dedication the UN's invitation for this very important anniversary, because it's a day that must remind us of the importance of valuing every individual and breaking down barriers that limit essential rights, such as access to facilities health care, education and job opportunities, through enhancing information services and all essential services, removing obstacles that people with disabilities are forced to face on a daily basis ".
Disability data in Italy
On the education front, although the objective of ensuring equal opportunities for disabled people is still far from being reached according to Istat, some positive signals have already been recorded. For example, students with disabilities in the Italian school have gone from just over 200 thousand enrolled in the 2009/2010 school year to over 272 thousand in the 2017/2018. school year. And the number has grown by 75 % Support teachers in the same time frame: from 89 thousand to 156 thousand. From the inclusivity of education, the measure of civilization of a country passes. This is why, legislation on the rights of people with disabilities and, in particular, school inclusion, remains among the most advanced in the world.
There is no doubt, however, that the levels of implementation of standards and delivery of services in the different realities of our country are still too diverse.
For this reason the invitation, on the occasion of this day and beyond, is to promote and carry out awareness-raising actions to support and defend the rights of people with disabilities and promote the removal of all barriers that hinder their development, stating the full respect for human dignity, always and for each person.
