Την Πέμπτη 12 Ιουλίου στις 17.30, στο πλαίσιο της έκθεσης Unpacking My Library, η οποία παρουσιάζεται στο ΕΜΣΤ μέχρι τις 15 Ιουλίου και πραγματοποιείται με τη στήριξη της διοργάνωσης Αθήνα 2018 Παγκόσμια Πρωτεύουσα Βιβλίου του δήμου Αθηναίων, οι συμμετέχοντες καλλιτέχνες Angela Detanico και Rafael Lain θα πραγματοποιήσουν στην Αίθουσα Προβολών του Μουσείου μια Περφόρμανς – Ομιλία με τίτλο Fragments. Parts of pieces illustrated by illustrious texts.
Οι Angela Detanico και Rafael Lain γεννήθηκαν το 1973 και 1974 αντίστοιχα στο Caixas do Sul, Βραζιλία, ενώ ζουν και δραστηριοποιούνται στο Παρίσι. Με σπουδές σημειολογίας και γραφιστικής αντίστοιχα, διερευνούν – μέσα από μια ποικιλομορφία μέσων και πρακτικών – συστήματα γραφής, γλωσσικούς κώδικες και νέες τυπογραφίες, σε σχέση με τα όρια της επικοινωνίας, της αναπαράστασης του χώρου και του χρόνου καθώς και της οπτικής αντίληψης. Το πλούσιο έργο τους χαρακτηρίζεται από μια συνεχή μεταφραστική διαδικασία και μείξη γλωσσικών, καλλιτεχνικών κωδίκων και επιστημονικών συστημάτων.
Η δράση στο πλαίσιο της έκθεσης Unpacking My Library αποτελείται από δύο μέρη. Στο πρώτο μέρος οι καλλιτέχνες θα πραγματοποιήσουν την περφόρμανς με τίτλο Fragments. Parts of pieces illustrated by illustrious texts, στην οποία αναγνώσεις αποσπασμάτων κειμένων από μια πληθώρα πηγών σε διαφορετικές γλώσσες - από τον Οράτιο έως τον Πολ Βαλερύ και την Γερτρούδη Στάιν - συνυφαίνονται με εικόνες και βίντεο από την καλλιτεχνική τους παραγωγή. Στο δεύτερο μέρος, οι δυο καλλιτέχνες με αφετηρία τα δύο έργα που παρουσιάζουν στην έκθεση, την βιντεοπροβολή Conscience, 2016 και την εγκατάσταση Στο μέσο των πραγμάτων (Pilha), 2018 που σχεδιάστηκε ειδικά για την έκθεση στο ΕΜΣΤ, θα αναπτύξουν τους βασικούς άξονες της καλλιτεχνικής τους πρακτικής και έρευνας.
Οι Angela Detanico και Rafael Lain ξεκίνησαν να εργάζονται μαζί από το 1996. Το 2004 έλαβαν το Nam June Paik Award. Το 2007 εκπροσώπησαν τη Βραζιλία στην Μπιενάλε Βενετίας. Έχουν παρουσιάσει το έργο τους σε πολυάριθμες ατομικές και ομαδικές εκθέσεις: CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Jeu de Paume, Pampulha museum, ICC, Tokyo, MALBA Buenos Aires, Moderna Museet, MUDAM Luxembourg κ.ά. Ζουν και εργάζονται στο Παρίσι.
Η παρουσίαση θα γίνει στα αγγλικά με διαδοχική μετάφραση στα ελληνικά.
Unpacking My Library
Με αφετηρία την βιβλιοθήκη ως μεταφορά για έναν χώρο διάσωσης, συσσώρευσης, ταξινόμησης και οργάνωσης της γνώσης, η έκθεση Unpacking My Library διερευνά καλλιτεχνικές πρακτικές γύρω από ζητήματα του συλλέγειν, διαχείρισης συστημάτων γνώσης και διαμοιρασμού πληροφορίας, ενεργοποίησης μνήμης και επαναπραγμάτευσης της ιστορίας. Ο τίτλος της έκθεσης προέρχεται από το ομώνυμο δοκίμιο του Walter Benjamin Unpacking My Library. A talk about book collecting (Αποσυσκευάζω τη βιβλιοθήκη μου. Λόγος για την συλλεκτική δραστηριότητα). Τα έργα που παρουσιάζονται στην έκθεση πραγματεύονται πραγματικές ή φανταστικές βιβλιοθήκες, μελλοντικές ή παρελθούσες, με κυριολεκτική ή φασματική παρουσία που βρίσκονται στον φυσικό χώρο ή στο ψηφιακό περιβάλλον.
Η έκθεση, αξιοποιώντας την υφιστάμενη υποδομή του χώρου της βιβλιοθήκης πριν την έναρξη της κανονικής του λειτουργίας, συγκεντρώνει συμμετοχές από δώδεκα καλλιτέχνες από τη συλλογή, το αρχείο και τη βιβλιοθήκη του ΕΜΣΤ, πρόσφατα και ιστορικά έργα καθώς και νέες παραγωγές.

On Thursday, 12 July at 17.30, as part of the exhibition Unpacking My Library which is hosted at EMST until July 15 and organised under the program Athens World Book Capital 2018 City of Athens, participating artists Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain will present in the Museum’s Screening Room their performance and talk Fragments. Parts of pieces illustrated by illustrious texts.
Born in Caixas do Sul, Brazil in 1973 and 1974, respectively, Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain live and work in Paris. Having studied semiology and graphic design respectively, they use a variety of media and practices to explore writing systems, linguistic codes and new typographies in terms of the limits of communication, the representation of space and time and visual perception. Their rich work entails a constant process of translating and mixing linguistic, artistic and scientific systems.
Their action in the context of Unpacking My Library is in two parts. In part one the artists present the performance Fragments. Parts of pieces illustrated by illustrious texts, in which the reading of excerpts from texts in many languages and from different sources – from Horace to Paul Valery and Gertrude Stein – are combined with images and animations from their own artistic production. In part two, starting from their two works in the exhibition, the video projection Conscience (2016) and the installation In the middle of things (Pilha) (2018), designed specifically for the EMST exhibition, the two artists explain the main axes of their artistic practice and research.
Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain have been working together since 1996. In 2004 they won the Nam June Paik Award. In 2007 they represented Brazil in the Venice Biennale. They have presented their work in numerous solo and group exhibitions – CCS Bard Hessel Museum, Jeu de Paume, Pampulha Museum, ICC, Tokyo, MALBA Buenos Aires, Moderna Museet, MUDAM Luxembourg, etc. They live and work in Paris.
The presentation will be realized in English with a consecutive interpreting in Greek.
Unpacking My Library
Starting from the library as a metaphor of a space for the accumulation, classification and organization of knowledge, the exhibition Unpacking My Library explores artistic practices around collecting classifying systems of knowledge and sharing information, activating memory, revisiting history. The title comes from Walter Benjamin’s essay “Unpacking My Library. A talk about book collecting”. The works in the show are about existing or imaginary libraries, libraries of the past or the future, with a literal or virtual presence, in physical space or in a digital environment.
The exhibition, using the infrastructure and layout of the museum’s library shortly before it is put to its regular use, features twelve artists from the EMST collection, archive and library, recent or historical works as well as new productions designed specifically for the space.
