URBAN SECRET GARDEN – A READING

On Tuesday, February 18th 2020, Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center presents Lia Nalbantidou’s solo show, titled Urban Secret Garden – A reading.
The exhibition will run until March 21st 2020.
The photographic series Urban Secret Garden - a reading is an exhibit of the history of Thessaloniki and began as an improvisation in 2009, during purposeless morning walks around the city.
The series consists of contemporary photographs (2010 - 2014) depicting the urban landscape of Thessaloniki, but also older ones from the photographer's family archive (1950 - 2008): old and new images, articulated upon the steps of long walks taken place from winter to summer and from late at night until dawn. The modern-day photos capture the historic center of the city and the Upper Town/Ano Poli, the harbour, Ladadika neighbourhood, and the coastal route on an eastward direction towards Kodra military camp and Karaburnaki area up to Florida Shopping Mall and Macedonia Airport.
Family snapshots date from 1950 to 1990. The father, mother and grandmother of the artist are depicted in the garden, in front of the window of the Upper Town house, on the terrace or in the sampling hall of the prêt-à-porter small industry run by the family.
In an interview in Lifo newspaper, the photographer mentions: "Walking through the city one day, I realized that I was “seeing” all that was no longer there: the Dodoni bougatsa pastry shop on this corner, Niko’s carpentry shop a little further down, the Plus Size Fashion shop on the corner of Iktinou and Pavlou Mela Streets, the Studio 54 Disco, and the cool ice-cream shop named “The Beauty” where I used to hang out as a teenager… Upon completion of the shootings for the photography project, I was searching for a narrative. A personal incidence led me to the large black boxes where I keep family pictures. I have an obsession with family photo albums, boxes, dossiers or folders, where images representing life that passes by are stored; family snapshots forgotten in drawers along with old receipts, the stub of a pencil that doesn’t write, an eraser that doesn’t erase...”.
Photographs of the exhibition are also included in Nalbantidou's photobook Urban Secret Garden: a trilogy book of photographs. Flipping through the book for the first time, readers encounter the contemporary photographs, yet with a second reading, they are asked to cut open the hidden pages, in order to discover the old family photographs.
“There are threads in the book” continues the photographer. “Red, green and yellow: a different color for each of the book’s chapters: “Why the night”, “Mediterranean Air” and “Ano Poli Suite”. The threads signal the hidden archival photos that the reader is called upon to discover... I came up with colored threads and family photo archives almost the same way that past images and flavors are drawn to our consciousness. That is where I observe the seams joining the pieces into one unified piece of clothing that contains us. The colored DMC threads, the French white linen, the embroidery on the cover, the floral motifs of the contemporary photographs, all refer to the family business of ready-to-wear women’s clothing, which eventually closed in the late 1990s. In my book, handmade items converse with mass-produced ones".
Lia Nalbantidou was born in Thessaloniki. She studied Photography (BFA, 1991) at Columbus College of Art & Design (Columbus - Ohio) in USA and Humanities (Body Academy) at International Women's University - EXPO 2000 in Germany. Her work (photos and artists' books) is represented in private collections, museum collections and libraries: National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) & Benaki Museum - Athens, Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Architekturbild EV - Stuttgart, Gulbenkian Art Library – Lisbon, Photoireland Foundation Collection - Dublin, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library - Yale University & Weserburg Research Centre for Artists' Books - Bremen.

Irini Sapka.
The exhibition is a co-production with the National Bank of Greece Culural Foundation (www.miet.gr) and was presented for the first time in the Spring of 2019 at the MIET Cultural Center in Thessaloniki.

Την Τρίτη 18 Φεβρουαρίου στις 19:30, εγκαινιάζεται στο Κέντρο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Ιλεάνα Τούντα η ατομική έκθεση της Λίας Ναλμπαντίδου με τίτλο Αστικός Μυστικός Κήπος – Μια ανάγνωση.
Η έκθεση θα διαρκέσει έως τις 21 Μαρτίου 2020.
H φωτογραφική εργασία Αστικός μυστικός κήπος - Μια ανάγνωση είναι ένα τεκμήριο για την ιστορία της Θεσσαλονίκης και ξεκίνησε ως αυτοσχεδιασμός το 2009, κατά τη διάρκεια άσκοπων, πρωινών περιπάτων στην πόλη.
Η ενότητα αποτελείται από σύγχρονες φωτογραφίες (2010 -2014) που απεικονίζουν το αστικό τοπίο της Θεσσαλονίκης, αλλά και παλιότερες από το οικογενειακό αρχείο της φωτογράφου (1950 - 2008): εικόνες παλιές και νέες, αρμολογημένες πάνω στα βήματα ενός μεγάλου περιπάτου από το χειμώνα στο καλοκαίρι και από πολύ αργά το βράδυ μέχρι τα ξημερώματα της επόμενης μέρας. Οι σύγχρονες φωτογραφικές λήψεις αφορούν το ιστορικό κέντρο και την Άνω Πόλη, το λιμάνι, τα Λαδάδικα και το παραλιακό μέτωπο σε μια διαδρομή ανατολικά προς το στρατόπεδο Κόδρα και το Καραμπουρνάκι μέχρι το εμπορικό Κέντρο Florida και το αεροδρόμιο Μακεδονία.
Τα οικογενειακά στιγμιότυπα προέρχονται από το 1950 έως το 1990. Απεικονίζονται ο πατέρας, η μητέρα, η γιαγιά, στον κήπο, στο παράθυρο του σπιτιού της Άνω Πόλης, στην ταράτσα ή στον χώρο δειγματισμού της οικογενειακής prêt-à-porter βιοτεχνίας.
Σε συνέντευξή της στην εφημερίδα Lifo, η φωτογράφος αναφέρει: «Περπατώντας μια μέρα μέσα στην πόλη, συνειδητοποίησα πως “έβλεπα” όλα αυτά που δεν υπήρχαν πια: σ' αυτή τη γωνία η μπουγάτσα Δωδώνης, λίγο παρακάτω το μαραγκούδικο του Νίκου, γωνία Ικτίνου και Π. Μελά το κατάστημα “Μόδα για Παχουλές”, το studio 54, το cool παγωτατζήδικο “η Ωραία” – στέκι των εφηβικών μου χρόνων... Ολοκληρώνοντας την παραπάνω εργασία, αναζητούσα μια αφήγηση. Μια προσωπική συγκυρία με οδήγησε στα μεγάλα μαύρα κουτιά όπου έχω φυλαγμένες τις οικογενειακές φωτογραφίες. Έχω μια εμμονή με τα φωτογραφικά οικογενειακά άλμπουμ, τα κουτιά ή τα ντοσιέ όπου περιέχονται οι εικόνες που αναπαριστούν τη ζωή που περνά: οικογενειακά ενσταντανέ παρατημένα μέσα σε συρτάρια, ανακατεμένα με παλιές αποδείξεις, κάποιο μολύβι που δεν έγραφε, καμιά σβήστρα που δεν έσβηνε...»
Φωτογραφίες της έκθεσης περιέχονται και στο photobook της Ναλμπαντίδου Urban Secret Garden: a trilogy book of photographs. Στο πρώτο ξεφύλλισμα του βιβλίου, ο αναγνώστης συναντά τις σύγχρονες φωτογραφίες, ωστόσο σε μια δεύτερη ανάγνωση καλείται να κόψει τις κρυμμένες σελίδες, προκειμένου να ανακαλύψει τις παλιές οικογενειακές φωτογραφίες.
Η φωτογράφος συνεχίζει: «Οι κλωστές του βιβλίου είναι κόκκινες, πράσινες, και κίτρινες: ένα χρώμα για καθεμία από τις τρεις ενότητες του βιβλίου (Why the night, Mediterranean air, The Ano Poli suite). Οι κλωστές σηματοδοτούν τις κρυμμένες φωτογραφίες αρχείου που ο αναγνώστης καλείται να ανακαλύψει. Όπως ανασύρονται στο συνειδητό μας εικόνες και γεύσεις, κάπως έτσι έφτασα στις κλωστές και τις οικογενειακές αρχειακές φωτογραφίες. Εκεί παρατηρώ τις ραφές να συνδέουν τα κομμάτια σ' ένα ενιαίο ρούχο που μας περιλαμβάνει. Οι χρωματιστές DMC κλωστές, το γαλλικό λευκό λινό, το κέντημα του εξωφύλλου, τα φλοράλ μοτίβα των σύγχρονων φωτογραφιών έχουν όλα την αναφορά τους στην οικογενειακή επιχείρηση prêt-à-porter γυναικείων ενδυμάτων που έκλεισε οριστικά στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '90. Στο βιβλίο μου, η χειροποίητη εργασία συνδιαλέγεται με το έργο μαζικής αναπαραγωγής».
Η Λία Ναλμπαντίδου γεννήθηκε στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Σπούδασε Φωτογραφία (BFA, 1991) στο Columbus College of Art & Design (Columbus – Ohio) στις ΗΠΑ & Humanities (Body Academy) στο Διεθνές Πανεπιστήμιο Γυναικών – EXPO 2000 στη Γερμανία. Το έργο της (Φωτογραφίες και Artists’ Books) αντιπροσωπεύεται σε ιδιωτικές συλλογές, σε συλλογές μουσείων και σε βιβλιοθήκες: Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης (ΕΜΣΤ) & Μουσείο Μπενάκη – Αθήνα, Μουσείο Φωτογραφίας Θεσσαλονίκης, Architekturbild EV – Στουτγάρδη, Gulbenkian Art Library – Λισαβώνα, Photoireland Foundation Collection – Δουβλίνο, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library – Yale University & Weserburg Research Centre for Artists’ Books – Βρέμη.
Ο σχεδιασμός της έκθεσης έγινε με τη συνεργασία της αρχιτεκτόνισσας Ειρήνης Σάπκα.
Η έκθεση αποτελεί συμπαραγωγή με το Μορφωτικό Ίδρυμα Εθνικής Τραπέζης - ΜΙΕΤ (www.miet.gr) και παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά την Άνοιξη του 2019 στο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο του ΜΙΕΤ Θεσσαλονίκης.
