Το “Songs of Rebellion” εισάγει μια νέα θεώρηση στις διαφορετικές ιστορικές προσεγγίσεις του μουσικού θεάτρου με τραγούδια. Η βάση δεν είναι μια αυτοτελής ιστορία, ούτε ένα δράμα καθαυτό. Δεν αναπαράγεται ούτε τραγουδιέται κάποια μυθιστορηματική πράξη, αλλά συντίθεται και εκτελείται ένα ερμηνευτικό γεγονός, του οποίου τα αναπόσπαστα και διαμορφωτικά συστατικά είναι τραγούδια. Στη διαδικασία αυτή, η αναδυόμενη μουσικοθεατρική περφόρμανς –εστιάζοντας στο κοινωνικοπολιτικό φαινόμενο της εξέγερσης– κυμαίνεται ανάμεσα σε μια αντιπαράθεση με την πολιτική διαδήλωση, στις αντιφάσεις της και σε άλλες πολιτισμικές επιτελέσεις του τραγουδιού. Στο “Songs of Rebellion” όλοι οι μουσικοί είναι ταυτόχρονα περφόρμερ και τραγουδιστές. Ως ηθοποιοί, συνδέουν μορφές διαμαρτυριών από διαφορετικές εποχές με τους νέους ορισμούς που προκύπτουν από την ψηφιακή επανάσταση, αξιοποιώντας μια ποικιλία νέων δυνατοτήτων στη σύνθεση και τη σκηνοθεσία τραγουδιών.
Μετά το “iScreen, YouScream” (2017), το “Songs of Rebellion” είναι το δεύτερο έργο της Μπριγκίτα Μούντεντορφ και του Μίκαελ Χέπνερ. Σε αυτή τη διαδικασία παραγωγής θα συναντηθούν για πρώτη φορά το Opera Lab Berlin και το #EnsembleGarage, δύο σύνολα σύγχρονου μουσικού θεάτρου και σύγχρονης μουσικής, καλλιτεχνικοί διευθυντές των οποίων είναι η Μούντεντορφ και ο Χέπνερ, αντίστοιχα. Δημιουργούν μια «κοινότητα πρακτικής» (Community of Practice), αποτελούμενη από διάφορα μουσικά σύνολα και καλλιτέχνες, ενώ αφήνονται στην ατομική και συλλογική επήρεια του τραγουδιού για να παρουσιάσουν επί σκηνής την αμφίσημη σχέση του με διάφορες μορφές εξέγερσης.
Η δράση υλοποιείται στο πλαίσιο του δικτύου Sounds Now, που συγχρηματοδοτείται από το πρόγραμμα Creative Europe της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης.

Contradictory, resisting and affirmative, transitory or even lost, the protest song is a special type of song that appears as immortal as it is infinitely vulnerable. In #SongsOfRebellion, composer Brigitta Muntendorf and director Michael Höppner unfold an experiential space of musical, theatrical and medial links of resistance and dedication, in which escapism and agitation, art and politics, contemporary music and pop, contemplation and action can always be a fanfare as well as a lullaby of rebellion. “Songs of Rebellion”, chooses a new approach in dealing with different historical approaches of a music theater of the song. The basis is not a special story, not a drama in the true sense. No fictional act is played and sung, but a performative event is composed and staged, whose integral and formative components are songs. In the process, the emerging music theater performance - in line with our interest in the socio-political phenomenon of the rebellion - oscillates between a confrontation with the political manifestation, its contradictions and other cultural performances of the song. In “Songs of Rebellion”, all musicians are at the same time performers and singers. As actors, they connect forms of protests from different epochs to the new definitions that emerge from the digital revolution and in their appearance a variety of new possibilities in the composition and staging of songs await their release.
After "iScreen, YouScream" (2017), “Songs of Rebellion”, is the second production of Brigitta Muntendorf and Michael Höppner. In this working process, the two ensembles for contemporary music theater and contemporary music Opera Lab Berlin and #EnsembleGarage, whose artistic direction Brigitta Muntendorf and Michael Höppner respectively hold, will meet for the first time. In “Songs of Rebellion”, they follow the attempt to create a process following the idea of a “Community of Practice”, in which collective interpretations and reflections are essential for the unpredictable artistic result.
