#OMONΟΙΑ_LOVERS’’ PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
ATHENS CITY HALL, 63, Athinas street, Athens
Opening: 11-14 May 2023

#omonoia_lovers were created unexpectedly in 2013 when photographer Stratos Neslechanidis made a spontaneous "click" with his camera to a romantic snapshot. This imperceptible movement of the photographic shutter gave the signal to bring together friends, colleagues and all kind of photography lovers. Since then the team captures moments and emotions with light. The photographers, guided by their love for the mean, move, live and observe Athens every day. Their main point of reference is the historic Omonia Square, which moves at a pace that is sometimes frenetic and sometimes you can barely feel it breathing. But always as if it is in a constant oscillation. From early in the morning till late at night, day by day, you can constantly feel it transforming. Somehow, the Square itself gave birth to the idea of the #omonoia_lovers photo group.
"It all started ten years ago, when I was going down the stairs of the train in Omonia and I took a picture of two young people kissing on the stairs. I uploaded it on social media with the hashtag #omonoia_lovers and that was that! The occasion to shake up the idea of a photographic group had been given.
So, some friends and I decided to show off our neighborhood through our photos. Beautiful moments of Athens, with Omonia in its center" says Stratos Neslechanidis.
The team consists of two photographers, a graphic designer, two artists, an illustrator and a translator. They use analog cameras with film, digital cameras and even mobile phones to capture, with their eyes, what most people miss when rushing through the heart of Athens. They capture this very special, colorful and full of contrasts immovable cultural space through photography.

"We are lovers of photography. We see it everywhere, from the time we wake up till the time we go to sleep. Personally, sometimes I even see photographic dreams. We may not be able to fundamentally change things and conditions in the world we`re living in. However, with some of our photos, we may raise some questions and throw some sparks. Our lens sees what we have in common, most of the time with an anthropocentric approach, but each of us with our own perspective. Several viewers get it right away, others are just passing by and others really stand to observe. The goal is for them to actually stop and really look. Each image is like a child being born, unique, noisy, smiling, winking in time. The infinitesimal time it takes for the camera's mirror to rise and which is enough for us to see our mirage against the image."
The team's logo looks like a cinematic symbol, full of energy and dynamism: it consists of a circle that symbolizes the square of Omonia and in the middle forms a lowercase "l" that refers to "lovers"... here! Lovers. #omonoia_lovers are sincere lovers of their Art and invite us to discover with them the charm of Omonia Square. A Square with its own idiosyncratic, undeclared and, many times, its own rules that do not go along with those of the rest of the city center.
