Between 2021 and 2023, one of the classical worlds most distinguished conductors joins forces with one of its most tradition-steeped orchestras to perform a Brahms cycle. Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra present four symphonies, the two piano concertos and several choral works. This live broadcast features the Second Piano Concerto with British pianist Stephen Hough and the Fourth Symphony. While the concerto shows Brahms at his most expansive and relaxed – its beautiful slow movement featuring a poignant cello solo – his last symphony achieves a depth of expression that verges on the tragic, especially in the grandly imposing passacaglia of the finale.
