Sibelius - Symphony no. 2 in D, op. 43
University Symphony Orchestra’s sold-out autumn concert was greeted with rapturous applause, and an all-Finnish programme of Sibelius and Aulis Sallinen is likely to prove just as popular! Aulis Sallinen – whose music has been described as a ‘beautifully crafted amalgam of several twentieth-century styles’ (The New York Times) – composed his orchestral prelude Shadows while he was working on his third opera, The King Goes Forth to France, and there are clear thematic similarities between the two works. Sibelius sketched large parts of his Second Symphony while on a trip to Italy in 1901. After completing the work on his return to Finland, he conducted the premiere of the Symphony in the March of 1902. A notable success with audiences at the time, it remains one of Sibelius’s most popular works.
