One of this year’s rare performances of Bach’s monumental and deeply moving St. Matthew Passion comes to you from the splendid Lucerne KKL concert hall. The award-winning young German conductor Florian Helgath directs an outstanding cast, featuring soloists Hannah Morrison, Anke Vondung, Jan Petryka, Milan Siljanov and Konstantin Wolff, as well as the professional ZÜRCHER SING-AKADEMIE choir and ORCHESTRA LA SCINTILLA, the renowned Baroque orchestra of the Zurich Opera.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is an account of the events leading to Jesus’s death on the cross according to the Evangelist Matthew, with arias and choruses by Bach’s lyricist, Picander. Part I encompasses events in Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the betrayal by Judas, and Jesus’s arrest. In Part II, Jesus appears before Caiaphas and Pilate and is eventually crucified. Throughout the Passion, the Evangelist recites Matthew’s gospel, while arias and occasional choruses offer comments, ask questions, offer space for reflection. The choir also represents the crowd, the mob or the Evangelists.
The Zürcher Sing-Akademie and Orchestra La Scintilla started their collaboration several years ago and have built a reputation for truly inspiring music-making, aided by the opera orchestra’s expertise in performing vocal music and the choir’s expertise as a specialised symphonic choir.
