Кураев отрицал сам факт магометанского террора в Константинополе и Малой Азии в 1821 г. и утверждал, что власть Константинопольского Патриарха при турках была даже больше, чем в православной Византии и в Московской Руси. Отповедь клевете протод. В первый день Пасхи 10 (23) апреля 1821 г. Святейший Архиепископ Константинополя - Нового Рима и Вселенский Патриарх Григорий V был низложен, а на его место возведён Евгений Писидийский. Когда новоизбранный возвращался из Порты в Патриархию с фирманом султана, тело 76-летнего Патриарха Григория V в полном облачении уже висело на воротах патриархии в Фанаре. Тело умученного святителя провисело на воротах Вселенской Патриархии три дня, т.к. греки не решались выкупить его у палачей в связи с османскими репрессиями против участников греческой национально-освободительной революции. На четвёртый день константинопольские евреи выкупили тело патриарха за 800 пиастров и после жестоких поруганий бросили в море, привязав к ногам камни (Στασινόπουλος Χ. Λεξικό Ελληνικής Επανάστασης 1821, τομ. Β΄, σελ. 64).
16 апреля 1821 г. тело было обретено греческими моряками судна под русским флагом «Святитель Николай» и доставлено в Одессу, где прибывшие по приглашению градоначальника Одессы графа Александра Ланжерона греки опознали в останках покойного патриарха; погребение совершил архиепископ Кишинёвский Димитрий (Сулима). Из-за слухов о поругании евреями тела Григория V в Одессе состоялся первый в Российской империи еврейский погром. Останки святителя покоились в Троицком греческом храме Одессы до 1871 г., когда они были перенесены в Афины.
В память о нём главные ворота Вселенской Патриархии были заколочены в 1821 г. и остаются навсегда остаются закрытыми, чтобы свидетельствовать о жертве (проход на территорию осуществляется только через боковую дверь).
В 1921 г.
