The Greek Cultural Center (GCC) and the project ′′ Foreigners in the City ′′ invite you to an author's tour dedicated to the Greek heritage in the Russian capital. On a pedestrian walk in the center of the capital, we will see Greek architecture that reflects Moscow buildings of the XIX century. Let's remember the close Russian-Byzantine religious and cultural ties. Finally, let's talk about the Greeks of different professions that came to Russia in the XVII-XIX centuries and find out where the overseas guests lived and what they did. A vivid example of the close religious contacts of Muscovy and Greek monasteries was the transfer of the list of the icons of the Virgin Iverskaya - one of their main religions of Athos in 1648 The icon was written at the request of Nikon, the future patriarch, the famous Greekophile. In gratitude to the Iverskaya Brotherhood in 1654 was transferred to the Nikolay Monastery, which has since been named Nikolo-Greek. Monks were granted a number of privileges, such as monthly maintenance from the Patriarchal Court.Another vivid example of the Greek cultural heritage in Moscow was the Slavic Greek-Latin Academy. At the origins of the first Russian university, which gave us Lomonosov and other outstanding scientists, stood two Greek monks. Brothers Johnny and Sofronius Lihuda arrived in Muscovy in 1685 and opened their famous school first in the Epiphany Monastery, and two years later moved to Zaikonospassky.
