Beethoven’s Imperial Sonatas

Beethoven’s Imperial Sonatas will be performed at Dom Radio on January 22. Vladislav Pesin and Yury Martynov will play Three Sonatas for violin and Hammerclavier, Op. 30 on authentic instruments.

Ludwig van Beethoven never met Alexander I, but he knew (from Prince Razumovsky, presumably) that the young enlightened monarch played the violin well. Shortly after the coronation of the Russian emperor, composer dedicated three violin sonatas to him.
By the beginning of the 19th century, that genre began to emerge from aristocratic salons and home parties into concert halls, and soon both the major sonatas, full of light and serene harmony, and the C minor Pathétique, grandiose and passionate, went outside the royal entourage. Ironically, Russian emperor did not appreciate the composer’s work at first, but today Beethoven’s violin sonatas are the gem of a concert, especially when played on the instruments for which they were created. In 2020, Yury Martynov and Vladislav Pesin were the first Russian musicians to record all ten sonatas on authentic instruments. While most of the recordings were made earlier in Italy, the three sonatas op. 30 were recorded at Dom Radio. The release on Melodiya is scheduled for the new season, but the luckiest listeners will hear the version of Vladislav Pesin and Yury Martynov on January 22.
