Chelsea Girl
Maria Callas returned to London in September 1958 to appear in a Chelsea at Eight programme, singing 'Casta Diva' from Bellini's Norma and 'Un bel di vedremo' from Puccini's Madama Butterfly, conducted by Sir John Pritchard. The programme was televised from the Chelsea Palace Theatre (originally Chelsea Palace of Varieties) on the King's Road, which had been taken over by Granada Television in the late 1950s for use as a studio. The theatre was demolished in 1966.
An Italian news magazine reported that she received an ovation from the spectators in the auditorium and the programme received hundreds of telegrams and telephone calls from television viewers applauding Callas's performance.
In the days that followed, Callas went into the recording studio to record two of her greatest EMI recitals, Mad Scenes from Donizetti's Anna Bolena, Bellini's Il Pirata and Thomas's Hamlet, and Verdi Arias from Nabucco, Ernani, Macbeth and Don Carlo.
