Maria Callas as Costanza from “Il Ratto dal Seraglio” in 1952. In other words, Konstanze from “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
During the orchestral prelude to ‘Martern aller Arten, mögen meiner warten, ich verlache Qual und Pein' ('Even if all kinds of torture are inflicted on me I shall ignore the pain and suffering) Callas, using only facial expressions, predisposed the audience to Constanze's extreme hardship. Her wide-ranging dramatic bravura singing - like a soloist in an instrumental concerto - consistently maintained its urgency with some new musical revelation; what in actuality is a concert aria became an intregral part of the drama as she went through the gamut of emotion - her courageous defiance followed by menace, subsequently changing to pleading.
