Success of P. Karousos' Opera "Prometheus Bound" at the Municipal Theater of Kallithea

With absolute success and in a packed Municipal Theater of Kallithea, the opera "Prometheus Bound" by the internationally renowned and acclaimed composer Panagiotis Karousos was presented on Monday, October 19, 2026. The performance was held under the auspices of the UNESCO Club for Arts, Literature and Sciences of Greece.

The opera "Prometheus Bound" by composer Panagiotis Karousos is presented under the auspices of the Club for UNESCO of Piraeus and Islands and with the support of the international organization International Action Art, presided over by Ioannis Maronitis, who is also the President of the World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Associations and Centres for Europe and North America.
The event opened with a greeting from the President of the Club, Ms. Nina Diakovasili, who expressed her warm thanks to the Mayor of Kallithea, Kostas Askounis, and the Deputy Mayor of Culture & Events, Giorgos Gerolymatos, as well as to the citizens of Kallithea who flooded the theater, actively supporting this great cultural event.
A Leading Cast in a Captivating Performance
The opera, which is based on the tragedy of the same name by Aeschylus, won impressions thanks to the exceptional performances of its protagonists. The great singer Nadia Karagianni thrilled the audience both with her presence and her wonderful voice in the role of the Coryphaeus (Leader of the Chorus).
The protagonists of the Greek National Opera, Eirini Konsta (Io) and Rea Voudouri (Oceanid), impressed with the range of their vocal abilities. Soprano Eirini Konsta was captivating as Io, fully responding to the demands of one of the most difficult dramatic roles in ancient Greek tragedy.
At the same time, two young lyric artists, Vasilis Dimitrakakis in the demanding role of Prometheus and Athanasios Lianos as Hermes, won the warm applause of the audience, proving the rich talent and will of the new generation to serve lyric singing. The actress and President of the UNESCO Club, Nina Diakovasili, stood out in the role of the goddess Hera with the clear reach of her speech and her excellent stage presence.
Impressive Choreographies and Top Production
The choreographer, dance and ancient orchestra professor, Eleni Gkogkou (who also performed Violence and the Goddess Athena), created impressive choreographies in the opera's introduction. For the needs of the opening, audio material was used from the historical presentation of the work in Washington, USA, conducted by maestro Grant Gilman.
The participation of the Choir and the Department of Ancient Orchestra of the Panepirotic Association of Eleusis (under the supervision of Ms. Gkogkou) added unique color and movement to the final result. Christiana Manou provided the musical accompaniment on the piano, while the excellent sound effects and atmospheric lighting by the theater director, Loukas Georgiadis, gave the performance a professional level that had nothing to envy from the large productions of the lyric field.
An Opera with a Global Journey
The audience remained spellbound until the last minute and burst into prolonged applause, calling the artists and the internationally renowned creator Panagiotis Karousos to the stage ten times (curtain calls).
It is recalled that "Prometheus Bound" has charted a brilliant international path, having been successfully presented in Montreal, New York, Washington, at the Sorbonne in Paris, and at the National Opera of Sofia in Bulgaria. In Greece, it has been staged at the Small Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, Ancient Messene, Veakeio, the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron - where on Thursday, May 7, 2026, composer Panagiotis Karousos was awarded for his music by the famous director Yannis Smaragdis and Ioannis Maronitis in a UNESCO Piraeus and Islands performance), as well as in dozens of other cities.
This historic performance at the Municipal Theater of Kallithea was filmed and videotaped by the World Philosophical Forum and Giannis Galanis, and is expected to be broadcast soon by the online channels of the Associations of Culture & Development (EN.P.AN.).
