Εληνορθόδοξη παιδεία και ειλικρίνεια

Βρισκόμαστε στον Καναδά. Εχουμε ιστορία περισσότερο από ένα αιώνα. Φύγαμε από την πατρίδα μας, την αιώνια Ελλάδα, με πολλά ιδανικά. Υποσχεθήκαμε να κρατήσουμε την ελληνικότητά μας, αλλά και την ορθόδοξη πίστη μας. Είναι καιρός με ειλικρίνεια να μελετήσουμε το θέμα αυτό και να απαντήσουμε τίμια.

Οι πρωτοπόροι, κατά κανόνα τήρησαν τις υποσχέσεις τους. Είχαν στο νου τους την ευχή της μάνας, αλλά και την κατάρα. «Μ’ αν την πατρίδα απαρνηθείς που την λατρεύουν όλοι, να ‘ναι η ζωή σου όπου κι αν πας, αγκάθια και τριβόλοι».

Τι συνέβη όμως στο διάβα της ζωής στην περίοδο εκατό και πλέον χρόνων ιστορίας του Ελληνισμού στον Καναδά;

Δυστυχώς, τα ήθη και τα έθιμα στην πατρίδα την Ελλάδα χαλάρωσαν. Πολλοί, αν δεν εγκατέλειψαν την ορθόδοξη πίστη τους, δεν την ζουν στην καθημερινή τους ζωή. Δεν την θεωρούν οδό σωτηρίας. Μερικοί δεν πιστεύουν καν στην μετά θάνατο ζωή. Δυστυχώς, οι νεώτεροι μετανάστες έφεραν αυτές τις ιδέες μαζί τους.

Για να διατηρηθεί η ελληνορθόδοξη ομογένεια στον Καναδά χρειάζεται ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία. Ας δούμε με ειλικρίνεια τι έχουμε κάμει.

Οι πρωτοπόροι ίδρυσαν ημερήσια ελληνορθόδοξα σχολεία, παρά τις οικονομικές δυσκολίες τις οποίες αντιμετώπιζαν. Παράδειγμα το ελληνορθόδοξο σχολείο του Μόντρεαλ, «Σωκράτης» που λειτουργεί από τις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα.

Σιγά, σιγά εγκατέλειψαν την ιδέα των ημερησίων ελληνορθοδόξων σχολείων και άρχισαν να έχουν απογευματινά ή σαββατιανά ελληνικά σχολεία. Αλλά, ας το παραδεχθούμε. Στα σχολεία αυτά δεν γίνεται σωστή δουλειά.

Μετά την δεκαετία του 1960 άρχισαν οι Ελληνες να επανέρχονται στην ίδρυση ημερησίων ελληνορθοδόξων σχολείων, αλλά όχι σε όλο τον Καναδά. Μόνο στο Μόντρεαλ και στο Τορόντο υπάρχουν ημερήσια ελληνορθόδοξα σχολεία, τα οποία κάμουν αρκετά καλή δουλειά.

Δεδομένου του ότι δεν μπορούμε να ζήσουμε χωρίς ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία, σαν ελληνική ομογένεια και σαν ελληνορθόδοξη πίστη, ας δούμε πόσο κάνουμε ο καθένας το καθήκον του. Ας ρωτήσουμε μερικές ερωτήσεις και ο καθένας ας απαντήσει μόνος του, αλλά με ειλικρίνεια και συνείδηση.

Ο Μητροπολίτης και οι ιερείς δίδουν τον καλύτερο εαυτό τους στην ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία; Πόσο από τον καιρό τους δαπανούν για την ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία και με πόση διάθεση και ζήλο; Οι Κοινότητές μας οι οποίες έχουν την ευθύνη της ελληνορθόδοξης παιδείας, πως εργάζονται; Υπάρχει σωστή και ενθουσιώδης συνεργασία μεταξύ ιερέως και διοικητικού συμβουλίου για το θέμα ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία; Βάζει η Κοινότητα την ψυχή της στο θέμα της ελληνορθόδοξης παιδείας; Μήπως για τα μάτια έχουμε ένα απογευματινό ή σαββατιανό ελληνορθόδοξο σχολείο;

Ας περάσουμε στους γονείς. Πιστεύουν οι γονείς, ότι η ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία είναι απαραίτητη για τα παιδιά τους; Καταλαβαίνουν, ότι χωρίς την ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία θα πάψουν να είναι Έλληνες και ορθόδοξοι; Πόσο ενδιαφέρονται για την ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία και πόσες προσπάθειες καταβάλλουν.

Τελικά, ας ελθουμε στο θέμα των διδασκάλων και διδασκαλισσών. Υπάρχουν σωστοί διδάσκαλοι και διδασκάλισσες για τα Ελληνικά στον Καναδά; Οι ελάχιστοι αποσπασμένοι δάσκαλοι και δασκάλες από την Ελλάδα κάνουν το καθήκον τους σωστά ή μήπως είναι εδώ για τον δεύτερο μισθό; Οι Κοινότητές μας προσλαμβάνουν δασκάλους-δασκάλες που πραγματικά πιστεύουν στην ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία; Οι δάσκαλοι και οι δασκάλες δίνουν τον καλύτερο εαυτό τους στην ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία; Μπορούν να συγκριθούν με τους δασκάλους και τις δασκάλες των καναδικών σχολείων; Τα παιδάκια -οι μαθητές- ζουν όλη τη μέρα στο καναδικό σχολείο, και όταν πηγαίνουν στο ελληνικό συγκρίνουν, θέλοντας ή μή θέλοντας. Τι βρίσκουν εκεί και τι σκέφτονται; Αυτά πρέπει να τα σκεφθούν οι διοικούντες τις Κοινότητες, οι ιερείς και όλοι μας.

Η σωστή διαπίστωση είναι, ότι έχουμε στον Καναδά ημερήσια ελληνορθόδοξα σχολεία και απογευματινά και σαββατιανά. Κοιτάζοντας όμως κατάματα την πραγματικότητα με τιμιότητα και ειλικρίνεια διαπιστώνουμε, ότι όλα τα ελληνικής καταγωγής παιδιά δεν είναι στα σχολεία μας γενικά. Η εργασία που γίνεται στα ημερήσια απογευματινά και σαββατιανά ελληνορθόδοξα σχολεία δεν είναι του βάθους που έπρεπε να είναι. Λοιπόν, τι πρέπει να κάνουμε;

Να απογοητευθούμε; Οχι. Καλώ όλους σας να ανασκουμπωθούμε. Από τον Μητροπολίτη μέχρι τους ιερείς, τα διοικητικά συμβούλια, τις επιτροπές ελληνικής παιδείας, τους δασκάλους και τους γονείς. Να καταλάβουμε ότι χωρίς ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία δεν μπορούμε να συνεχίζουμε να υπάρχουμε σαν ελληνορθόδοξη ομογένεια. Αφού το αντιληφθούμε αυτό, το διαπιστώσουμε και το χωνέψουμε, να αλλάξουμε πορεία. Να κάνουμε περισσότερα για την ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία με τιμιότητα και ειλικρίνεια. Έτσι μόνο θα είμαστε άξιοι της ελληνορθόδοξης καταγωγής μας και της θαυμάσιας ιστορίας μας. Ετσι μόνο θα κρατηθούμε και θα μεγαλουργήσουμε σαν ελληνορθόδοξη ομογένεια. Καλώ τον εαυτό μου και όλους στις επάλξεις. Για τη νίκη στο θέμα ελληνορθόδοξη παιδεία.

Greek Orthodox Education:

The Need for an Earnest Introspection

Our history here in Canada spans over a century. We left our homeland, carrying with us the eternal values and ideals of Hellas. We promised to preserve our Hellenic heritage, along with our Orthodox faith. It is useful to pause for a moment and honestly examine the pressing issue of Greek Orthodox education in Canada.

As a rule, our forbearers kept their promises. They remembered and honoured the mother’s farewell curse conveyed by the verse: “But if you deny your country, which everyone adores, may your life be filled, wherever you go, with thorns and weeds.”

So, what has happened in the course of the over one hundred year history of Hellenism in Canada?

Unfortunately, Hellenic traditions and customs have eroded back in Greece. Many people do not live out their Orthodox faith in their daily lives, if they have not altogether apostasized from the faith. They do not consider Orthodoxy as the path to salvation. Some do not even believe in life after death. Regrettably, the newest immigrants from Greece have imported these ideas with them to Canada.

For the Greek Orthodox community to be preserved in Canada, access to quality Greek Orthodox education is essential. Let us consider, in a sincere manner, what we have done on this front.

Despite the many financial hardships they faced, the first settlers from Greece organized Greek Orthodox schools in Canada. An illustrious example is the “Socrates” Greek Orthodox School in Montreal which was founded at the beginning of the 20th century.

Gradually, the idea of having Greek Orthodox day schools was abandoned. Instead, the after-school and Saturday Greek school programs were promoted as viable alternatives. Yet, the honest truth is that these schools cannot provide our children with a suitable education.

After the 1960s, Greek-Canadians began to revisit the idea of founding Greek Orthodox day schools, but not throughout all of Canada. Greek Orthodox day schools exist only in Montreal and Toronto, and continue to work quite well.

Since neither the Greek Canadian community nor the Greek Orthodox faith can survive without accessible and quality Greek Orthodox education, let us ask ourselves if everyone is doing their part in the promotion of Hellenism and Orthodoxy. I invite everyone to examine their conscience and answer these important questions honestly and responsibly.

Do the Metropolitan and all the clergymen give themselves wholeheartedly to the advancement of Greek Orthodox education? How much of their time do they dedicate for Greek Orthodox education? How much passion and zeal do they exhibit? Are the Communities responsible for delivering Greek Orthodox educational programs at a local level doing their part? When discussing Greek Orthodox education, is there an effective and positive working relationship between the Parish Priest and Community Council? Does the Community unequivocally invest in Greek Orthodox education? Or do we remain superficially content with our inadequate after-school or Saturday Greek Orthodox school program as to avoid dealing with the real issues?

Let us now turn our attention to the parents. Do the parents believe that Greek Orthodox education is necessary for their children? Do they understand that without Greek Orthodox education, their children will be neither Greek nor Orthodox? How much do they care for Greek Orthodox education, and how many efforts have they devoted to its advancement?

Finally, we come to the subject of the teachers. Are there qualified teachers for Greek schools in Canada? Do the few remaining teachers seconded from Greece faithfully work in pursuit of Greek Orthodox education, or are they merely here to earn a second salary? Do our Communities hire teachers who are committed to quality Greek Orthodox education? Do the teachers give their best efforts for Greek Orthodox education? Can they be compared to the teachers in Canadian day schools? Our children – the students – live all day in the Canadian day school system; thus, when they attend Greek school, it is only natural that they compare the quality of both learning experiences. What do they find? Are we making a positive impression? These are the things that those in charge of our Communities, our Priests and all of us must ponder very carefully.

To put the matter succinctly, we can say that in Canada we have two distinct categories of schools: (1) Greek Orthodox day schools and (2) after-school and Saturday Greek school programs. If we examine things sincerely and honestly, we will find that most students of Hellenic background are generally not attending either category of school. Moreover, the pedagogical activities that are being implemented in the after-school and Saturday Greek Orthodox schools are not at the level they should be. What should we do?

Should we be disillusioned? No. I call on all of us to roll up our sleeves, from the Metropolitan, to the Priests, to the Community Councils, to the Greek Education committees, to the teachers and parents. Let us come to the understanding that we will not survive as a Greek Orthodox community in Canada without accessible quality Greek Orthodox education. Once we truly comprehend and assimilate this fact, we will begin to address the problem. We should do more for our Greek Orthodox education, honestly and earnestly. Only in this way will we be worthy of our Greek Orthodox roots and the glorious history of our ancestors. Only in this way will the Greek Orthodox community in Canada not only preserve itself but also flourish. I call on both myself and everyone else to the front line, in order to successfully tackle the challenge of Greek Orthodox education.
