The Metropolis Congratulates Leo Housakos on Becoming the Speaker of the Senate of Canada

The Honourable Leo Housakos
On May 4, 2015, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the appointment of the Honourable Leo Housakos as the new Speaker of the Senate of Canada. Senator Housakos, who was appointed to the Senate on December 22, 2008, becomes its 44th Speaker. His appointment was jointly recommended by both leaders in the Upper Chamber, the Honourable Claude Carignan (Conservative) and the Honourable James Cowan (Liberal) and is a testament to the high-regard with which Senator Housakos is held by his colleagues.
Senator Housakos is a steadfast supporter of our Holy Metropolis and an unwavering advocate for the Greek Community in Canada. He previously served as Vice President (National Issues) with the Hellenic Congress of Quebec and co-founded the Hellenic Board of Trade in the Greater Montreal Area.
The new Speaker is a well-respected parliamentarian full of zeal and dedication for his duties. With his collaborative approach to solving political challenges and stated focus on openness and transparency, Senator Housakos is well positioned to lead his colleagues and improve the function of the Upper Chamber.
The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto (Canada) and His Eminence Metropolitan Sotirios – who has a long-established friendship with the new Speaker – sincerely congratulates Senator Housakos on his prestigious appointment. We offer our best wishes and blessings to the Speaker and his family, his wife Demi Papapanagiotou and their two children, Peter and Tasso.
The elevation of Senator Housakos as the Speaker of the Senate of Canada is a great honour for him but also a great honour for all Greek-Canadians.
