Porphyra Presents
 Porphyra, a Grecian Rock Opera
Anna and Vladimir: the love that ROCKED the world,
to receive world premiere
at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at 8 pm

April 17, 2015 - New York, NY -Porphyra, a Grecian Rock Opera arose out of the simple concept : to combine the story of one of the most compelling moments in Greek and World History with Folk Music, Hard Rock and Melodic Metal.

Porphyra will take the audience on an epic musical journey from the triumphs of Alexander the Great to the glories of Byzantium. The electric guitar in joyous harmony with bouzouki and violin sings the lives of the dreams and ambitions of two lovers who made their own fate and altered the course of history. The opera tells the story of Grand Prince Vladimir of Kievan Rus, the first Russian Empire, and Princess Anna Porphyrogenita of Constantinople, princess of Byzantium, the cultural beacon of the Mediterranean during Western Europe’s Dark Ages.

They meet and fall in love in the tumultuous year of 988 AD. Byzantium is powerful but vulnerable. Vladimir’s conversion led his nation to Greek Orthodox Christianity, and after his alliance with Constantinople, the balance of power shifts, ushering in a second Golden Age for Byzantium and a new civilization for young Russia. Our hero, Vladimir was the first King of the Rus, ancestors of the Belorussians, Ukrainians and Russians, and Princess Anna was instrumental in making Kiev a great center of Orthodox spirituality and Byzantine civilization.
The rock opera is directed by Donna McLaughlin Wyant, a critically-acclaimed director and an Emmy and CLIO award-winning writer and producer. Her songwriting has earned her a Grammy Certificate, as well as numerous other industry awards.
