Michael Vaccaro: This Interview before our "Aida im Schloss Schwetzingen 2008" says everything about why and how we started Opera Classica

On Thursday, August 7., Schwetzingen lives up to its reputation as a cultural city. At 20 o'clock the ′′ Opera Classica Europa ′′ will host a monumental open-air production of ′′ Aida ′′ in the castle garden.

We talked to director Michael Vaccaro, who has been in the middle of rehearsals since Monday, about the performance, the venue and the special feature of an open-air production.
What kind of production can Schwetzinger look forward to?
Michael Vaccaro: Classic! This is our trademark. This is what we had planned from the beginning - but it shouldn't mean dusty! The costumes and the set design are classic, otherwise I can promise an exciting production. History remains the same, of course. ...
... . that means even in your performance radames and aida die in the end?
Vaccaro: Yes, of course! Aida can be free, but she chooses to come back to die with this man. A story that touches us all.
They were already a guest in Schwetzingen. How do you judge the venue?
Vaccaro: I was very lucky to be able to perform at the city's New Year concert this year at the Rococotheater where I am with the Russian Philharmonic St. Petersburg sang. Honestly, Schwetzingen is one of the most important, if not the most important station in our tour. This brings us happiness, everyone knows the Schwetzinger Festival after all!
What risks does an outdoor performance pose?
Vaccaro: The stage and the orchestra must be rethought. We always look at the weather reports in front of the respective venues. When it's clear that it's not raining, we can build the stage a little bigger. In the event of rain, a 12 by 14 metre stage roof protects us. We can therefore play virtually any weather, we have raincapes ready for the audience. But I think we're going to have good weather, summer has started off so beautifully!
What special features do you have to pay attention to when it comes to open-air gigs?
Vaccaro: If there is no natural acoustics, for example in the park, it would be impossible for the last few rows in the audience to hear the singer if his voice was not amplified by a micro. This requires a technology that needs to be up to date - and we have it. Our Technical Director promised us that our technology would be the finest. I am convinced that Schwetzinger will experience a very nice ′′ Aida ′′ production.
Why has it been called ′′ Opera Classica Europa ′′ since this season and not ′′ L ' Opera Piccola "?
Vaccaro: When we started back then, I was aware that we had to perform the operas with renowned artists. That's why we worked with singers from Metropolitan Opera from the beginning. When we first performed in Spain in 2005, the press there surprisedly asked why we came with singers from the Metropolitan and then called ourselves ′′ piccola ", i.e. small ", Because we all stage our operas classically, the idea of a renaming to ′′ Classica ′′ arose and ′′ Europe ′′ of course because we host almost everywhere in Europe.
Your wife Romana is a singer herself. How often do you see each other?
Vaccaro: lately she sees me very little as I have to travel several times to every place we play to prepare. She herself is also well-occupied and has recently sung the opera ′′ Tosca ′′ with the world famous tenor Boiko Zwetanow.
She's a vocal coach too. What about the offspring in Germany?
Vaccaro: Very good! We have now started an international opera academy. In doing so, we work with different universities and make sure that there is an exchange. There are always talents there. In Schwetzingen, a young singer will take on a small role. Our job as an opera academy is to give talented young singers the opportunity to stand on stage with world famous singers. This is how they get the best training, because they can see how these people are coping with big games under pressure. Practice is the best way to learn!
What's really special about an opera tour as opposed to engaging in big houses?
Vaccaro: The best example is Schwetzingen: What could be better than singing in such a place in the castle garden! These are experiences you can't have at the theater. The atmosphere is a whole different one at an open air.

Maybe we can paint our Model of Tutanhkamun to look like the original for our "Aida" Production on the 8th of August in the Kurpark Bad Schwalbach.
