Πέρυσι, ο Yo-Yo Ma ξεκίνησε ένα νέο μουσικό ταξίδι. Αποφάσισε να ερμηνεύσει τις 6 σουίτες του Bach για σόλο τσέλο, σε 36 πόλεις σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο, σε εμβληματικές σκηνές, όπως αυτή του Ηρωδείου, που εκπροσωπούν την πολιτιστική κληρονομιά μας, τη δημιουργικότητα των σύγχρονων ανθρώπων και τις προκλήσεις που θα διαμορφώσουν το μέλλον μας για ειρήνη και κατανόηση.
Η Αθήνα αποτελεί έναν από τους 36 σταθμούς στην παγκόσμια περιοδεία του κορυφαίου τσελίστα:
"Οι σουίτες για τσέλο του Bach υπήρξαν σταθεροί μουσικοί συνοδοιπόροι μου. Εδώ και εξήντα χρόνια μου χαρίζουν έμπνευση, ανακούφιση και χαρά σε περιόδους άγχους, γιορτής αλλά και απώλειας. Πόση δύναμη δεν έχει αυτή η μουσική ώστε, ακόμα και σήμερα, μετά από 300 χρόνια, να εξακολουθεί να μας βοηθάει να ταξιδεύουμε μέσα σε δύσκολους καιρούς;".
Το κοινό του Φεστιβάλ Αθηνών θα έχει την ευκαιρία να απολαύσει τον Yo-Yo Ma στη μία και μοναδική, μαγική εμφάνισή του, στο Ηρώδειο, στις 30 Ιουνίου.

Yo-Yo Ma needs no introduction. Widely considered the greatest cellist in the world, he has received more than 18 Grammy Awards, and accolades including the Polar Music Prize (2012) and the United States National Medal of the Arts (2001). Throughout his career, he has joined partners from around the world and across disciplines — from Carlos Santana and Bobby McFerrin to the global collective of Silkroad musicians – to stretch the boundaries of genre and tradition, exploring how culture connects us.
Last year, Yo-Yo began a new journey, setting out to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello in one sitting in 36 locations around the world, iconic venues that — like the Odeon — encompass our cultural heritage, our current creativity, and the challenges of peace and understanding that will shape our future.
Athens is one of the 36 stations on his world tour:
“Bach’s cello suites have been my constant musical companions,” says Yo-Yo. “For almost six decades, they have given me sustenance, comfort, and joy during times of stress, celebration, and loss. What power does this music possess that even today, after three hundred years, it continues to help us navigate through troubled times?”
The audience of the Athens Festival will have the chance to enjoy Yo-Yo Ma in one of its unique, magical appearances at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, on June 30th.
