TOTAL MUSIC PREPARATION FOR SINGERS:
A 12 STEP PROGRAM FOR PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION by William Hicks
WILLIAM HICKS, Voice Coach, Conductor, Pianist and former Assistant Conductor at the Metropolitan Opera has coached, appeared in recital, on television, and in master classes with some of the leading singers of the day, including Luciano Pavarotti, Licia Albanese, Franco Corelli, Anna Moffo, Roberta Peters, Renata Scotto, Teresa Stratas and many others.
Maestro Hicks will conduct our second installment of a 10 week course of two 1.5 hour classes weekly with each week representing one essential aspect in the preparation of repertoire.
The students are graduating the program by presenting 2 vocal selections in a FINAL CONCERT that have been prepared according to the principles worked in class such as “Word Work”, musical content, diction, historical context, rhythmic structure, phrasing, melodic content, character study and strategies for presentation. In this class the performer will acquire the tools to prepare repertoire fully on their their own. As a result graduates of this class experience:
-unprecedented preparedness of all aspects of the material
-a deep understanding of the composer’s and lyricist’s intention
-a feeling that the material is completely connected to the body, mind and spirit
-calmness out of which we can be successful communicators
-the voice works more efficiently because it is now free to emanate from a deeper level of thorough preparation
In a supportive environment in a maximum class size of 12 singers participants of the program will have ample opportunities to present and explore their chosen repertoire. Collaborative pianist Jestin Pieper will be present to accompany at all classes. As a requirement participants of this course should possess a vocal technique that allows for efficient vocal production wherein pitch, legato, diction and dynamics can be easily produced. Consistent attendance is mandatory.
Private coachings with Mr. Hicks are also available after class time at a preferential rate
of $60/hour at the facilities of Long Island City Academy of Music.
