MAY 15, 2016: INDIVIDUAL FINE ARTS EXHIBITION OF THE ICONOGRAPHER MILTIADIS V. AFENTOULIS AT THE ARCHDIOCESAN HELLENIC CULTURAL CENTER IN NEW YORK
During the exhibition, handmade byzantine iconographies, according to the traditional technique, by the renowned iconographer, Miltiadis V. Afentoulis, will be presented.
Mr. Ioannis Maronitis, the President of the Club for UNESCO Piraeus and Islands and Member of the Board of the World Federation of Associations and Club Centres for UNESCO, responsible for Europe and North America, referring to the distinguished iconographer, Miltiadis V. Afentoulis, and his contribution to the Culture through his artwork, stressed that “It is a great honor for us to held under the auspices of UNESCO this certain individual fine arts exhibition in New York. I regard it as the greatest exhibition of the iconographer, taking place during his most mature and perfected artistic career. Looking at his artwork over the last, at least, 10 years, I recognize that each piece of his art is special: the iconographer’s artistic contribution is not just important from a decorative point of view; most importantly, nowadays, where the dogmatic and symbolic meaning of the icon is compromised and perhaps distorted, he is devoted to the preservation of the right rules of this traditional unique art, expressing at the same time his personal creativity on his artwork. Undoubtedly, I consider him as one of the top representatives of the byzantine art and I believe that the exhibition “Devoted to the preservation of the traditional byzantine art” is the culmination of a successful creative career, where the iconographer has still a lot to offer to the Culture.”

Miltiadis V. Afentoulis
He was born in Athens, in 1957, but has Greek Constantantinopolitan ancestry.
Since he was a child, he followed his father’s, Vasileios I. Afentoulis, example, who initiated him into the byzantine iconography art.
He co-operated along with him, for more than 25 years, while later on, he followed an individual career as an iconographer.
He is specialized in the decoration of large scale art (wall-paintings), as well as, in the preservation of iconographies.
He has participated in fine arts exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
He is a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece, the Club for UNESCO Piraeus and Islands and a founding member of the Union “Aghia Sophia” of the Greeks originated from Constantinople and Asia Minor in Northern Attica (Greece).
Over the last few years, he has been offering, on a voluntarily basis, byzantine iconography lessons at Greek schools of Omogeneia in the U.S.A., in an attempt to contribute to the preservation of the Byzantine tradition to the future generations.
