On Sunday, January 8, 2017, the Greek-Canadian Federation of Laconian Association of Montreal held a fundraising dinner in support of the Holy Metropolis of Monemvasia and Sparta. This is the second such dinner which has been organized for this worthy cause.
From information to date, we know that the Laconians and Kastorians have thus far helped the institutions of the Holy Metropolises of Monemvasia and Sparta and, Kastoria, respectively.
Metropolitan Sotirios, on numerous occasions, has asked and encouraged all the Greek associations in Canada to organize these types of fundraising events to assist the various pastoral needs of Metropolises in Greece. Furthermore, Metropolitan Sotirios asks and encourages every Greek Orthodox family in Canada to sponsor one impoverished family in Greece, along with beginning to plan for our summer vacations to Greece.
This year’s dinner held by the Laconians of Montreal and Laval was held at the elegant Palace Reception Halls, whose owners -- Ν. Tsatas, T. Nikiforos, and their partners -- offered the hall, together with all the food and drink for the evening, free of charge. The dinner was attended by approximately 1,000 people.
Speakers that evening included: Mr. A. Venetsianakos, President of the Greek-Canadian Federation of Laconian Associations of Montreal; Mrs. P. Tambakologou, President of the Laconian Association of Montreal; Mr. Theodosopoulos, President of the Greek Federation of Quebec; Mr. A. Krilis, Vice President of the Greek Community of Greater Montreal; His Excellency Mr. G. Marcantonatos, Ambassador of Greece in Canada; and, Metropolitan Sotirios. His Eminence Metropolitan Efstathios of Monemvasia and Sparta also spoke via telephone.
The dinner itself was fantastic. A perfect atmosphere for a holy cause. Our Holy Metropolis and Metropolitan Sotirios congratulate the Laconians and ask all Greek associations and societies to organize such fundraising dinners to help the various institutions that have been set up by the Holy Metropolises of Greece, including the Holy Archdiocese of Crete and the Dodecanese.
