Encyclical of Archbishop Sotirios for New Year’s 2020

ΠΡΩΤΟΧΡΟΝΙΑ 2020 Ευλαβεστάτους Ιερατικώς Προϊσταμένους, Εντιμοτάτους Προέδρους και Αξιότιμα Μέλη των Διοικ. Συμβουλίων, Φιλοπτώχους Αδελφότητες, Διδασκάλους, Διδασκάλισσες, Μαθητές και Μαθήτριες, Νεολαία των Κοινοτήτων και άπαν το ευλαβές πλήρωμα της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Καναδά Δίψα και φως ΕΓΚΥΚΛΙΟΣ ΠΡΩΤΟΧΡΟΝΙΑΣ Αρχιεπισκόπου Σωτηρίου “Διψούν οι κάµποι για νερό και τα βουνά για χιόνια. Διψά η σκλάβα λευτεριά εδώ και τόσα χρόνια” (δηµοτικό). Διψά η δόλια η ψυχή το φως του Θεανθρώπου. Το έτος 2019 τελείωσε. Να ρίξουµε µια µατιά να δούµε τι έγινε. Δυστυχώς, η εικόνα δεν είναι πολύ ευχάριστη. Πόλεµοι. Ακαταστασίες. Φτώχεια. Γκρίνια. Μετανάστες πνίγονται στις θάλασσες. Προσπαθούν να βρουν καλύτερη ζωή. Το επιτυγχάνουν; Όχι πάντοτε. Το αίµα χύθηκε άφθονο. Τρομοκράτες µε µαχαίρια κόβουν τους λαιµούς των αθώων. Άνθρωποι που έχασαν τη λογική τους, µε ένα πιστόλι στο χέρι σκοτώνουν αθώους. Άνδρες. Γυναίκες. Αθώα παιδιά. Μαθητές των σχολείων. Ιδού λοιπόν. Το αίµα χύθηκε άφθονο στο έτος 2019. Μπροστά µας ξανοίγεται το έτος 2020. Το ατενίζουµε και σκεπτόµαστε. Πού πηγαίνουµε; Η πονεµένη ψυχή µας ζητάει φως. Ζητάει ειρήνη. Ζητάει αγάπη. Ζητάει αδελφοσύνη. Ζητάει ευτυχία. Ποιος θα µας δώσει όλα αυτά; Οι δυνατοί της γης φαίνεται δεν τα καταφέρνουν. Πολλές φορές τα µπερδεύουν. Βλέπουν µόνο τα δικά τους συµφέροντα. Βεβαίως, όχι όλοι και όχι πάντοτε. Τι μας απομένει; Η µεγάλη ελπίδα. Ο ενανθρωπήσας Θεός. Το βρέφος της Βηθλεέµ. Ο µόνος αληθινός Θεός. Ο Χριστός. Πονεµένη ψυχή, όποια κι αν είσαι. Πιστή ή άπιστη. Χριστιανέ ή µη χριστιανέ. Ζήτα τον Χριστό. Φώναξέ Του. Θα σε ακούσει. Θα σου απαντήσει. Είναι η µόνη ελπίδα. Αγαπηµένοι µου χριστιανοί, όποιοι κι αν είστε, όπου κι αν είστε. Στο έτος 2020 όλοι να γυρίσουµε στον Χριστό. Εκεί θα βρούµε γαλήνη. Ειρήνη. Παρηγοριά. Φως αληθινό. Μη φοβάστε τα σκοτάδια. Μη φοβάστε την κακία. Μη φοβάστε τους τρομοκράτες. Μη φοβάστε τους ανισόρροπους. Δεν θα επικρατήσει η κακία. Ο Χριστός και το φως Του θα φωτίσουν τον κόσµο. Αρκεί εσύ και εγώ και ο καθένας µας να κλείσουµε µέσα στην ψυχή µας τον Χριστό. Αυτή είναι η προσευχή µου για το νέο έτος 2020. Με πατρική αγάπη και θερµές ευχές εν Χριστώ Τεχθέντι Ο ΑΡΧΙΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΟΣ Ο ΚΑΝΑΔΑ ΣΩΤΗΡΙΟΣ NEW YEAR’S DAY 2020 Reverend Fathers, Honourable Presidents and Esteemed Μembers of our Community Councils Philoptochos Societies, Teachers, Students and Youth of our Communities, and to all the Plenitude of our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada Thirst and Light 2020 NEW YEAR’S ENCYCLICAL By Archbishop Sotirios “The fields thirst for water and the mountains for snow. The slave, she thirsts for freedom for so many years” (popular song). Our poor soul thirsts for the light of the God-Man. The year 2019 is over. Let us take a look at what happened. Unfortunately, the picture is not very encouraging. Wars. Disorder. Poverty. Troubles. Refuges drowning in the sea. They are trying to find a better life. Do they achieve this? Not always. Blood was spilled abundantly. Terrorists with knives slit the throats of the innocent. People lose their minds and kill indiscriminately with guns. Men. Women. Children. Students in school. So here it is: blood was shed abundantly in 2019. The year 2020 is upon us. We gaze at it and ponder: what will happen? Our wounded soul seeks light. It craves for peace. It hungers for love. It yearns for brotherhood. It aspires to happiness. Who will give us all this? The mighty ones here on earth fail to do so. They are often confused. They only perceive their own interests. Of course, not everyone and not always. What are we left with? The great hope. The incarnate God. The infant of Bethlehem. The only true God. Christ our Lord. Wounded soul, whoever you are, faithful or unbelieving, Christian or non-Christian, seek out Christ. Cry out to Him. He will hear you. He will answer you. He is our only hope. My beloved Christians, whoever you are, wherever you are, in the year 2020 let us all return to Christ. In Christ, we will find harmony. Peace. Consolation. True light. Do not be afraid of the darkness. Do not be afraid of evil. Do not be afraid of the terrorists. Do not be afraid of those who lack a sense of moderation and temperance. Evil will not prevail. Christ and His Light will brighten up the world. All we have to do, you and I, and each one of us, is to place Christ within our souls. This is my prayer for the New Year 2020.
