Karabits conducts memoriam work honoring father
HOUSTON (March 29, 2011) – Returning to the site of his North American
debut, Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits will take the Houston Symphony
podium on April 14, 16 and 17 at Jones Hall performing Mendelssohn’s Scottish
Symphony No. 3. Beginning the concert is a performance of Valentin Silvestrov’s
Elegy, a work with significant ties to Karabits, followed by American violin
virtuoso Leila Josefowicz and her performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto.
Silvestrov’s Elegy is a memoriam piece written to honor Ukrainian composer Ivan
Karabits, father to Kirill Karabits, who passed away in 2002. Silvestrov was a
friend and colleague of Ivan Karabits and composed Elegy from unfinished music
sketches that Karabits had written while in the hospital. Kirill Karabits lead the
world premiere of this work on September 15, 2002, in Kiev.
