On February 12, 2017, almost 400 people attended a very successful fundraising dinner at the Metropolis Cultural Centre in Toronto – despite a major snowstorm which blanketed the city. The fundraiser was in support of the two Monasteries of our Holy Metropolis: St. Kosmas Aitolos (Bolton) and Panagia Parigoritissa (outside Montreal).
The event was organized by the Cultural Centre of our Metropolis. All parish communities of the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding cities participated and supported the dinner. Both Gerontissa Alexia and Gerontissa Thekla, along with a few Sisters, were present.
His Eminence spoke from the heart as a true father about his love for, and the importance of, monasteries within Orthodoxy. The Metropolitan described with admiration the strong faith of both Gerontissa Alexia and Gerontissa Thekla, who each came to Canada from Greece with only one other Sister and through their hard work and God’s Grace have bore much spiritual fruit in this country. He continued that work remains to build our Monasteries and announced that this fundraising dinner will take place each year at the Metropolis Cultural Centre.
Following His Eminence’s address, His Grace, the Reverend Fathers and students of our Theological Academy chanted Church hymns including the Apolytikion of Patrokosmas, Panagia Parigoritissa, Panagia Torontoessa and St. John the Theologian (Patron of our Academy). The group also sang a few traditional Greek songs to the delight of all who were present.
We sincerely thank all of the organizers — particularly Parish Priest Fr. Fanourios Pappas and Community President Mrs. Anastasia Sotiropoulos– as well as all the parishes, Reverend Fathers, individuals and groups, for their love, hard work and dedication to both Monasteries.
