Celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Flag

It will occur on the morning of Friday, February 13^th, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (50 Carlton Street, Toronto: formerly Maple Leaf Gardens). Invitees will gather on the ice surface (dressed in red) to create the Canadian flag. Renowned photographer, Mr. Ed Burtynsky will capture this iconic image to create a historic photograph. Dear Friend, I am writing to invite you to participate in an extraordinary gathering. Next month, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Flag. In communities across the country, citizens will gather to commemorate our beloved national symbol. The Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario is marking this very special occasion in a unique way. We are inviting 2015 Ontarians from all walks of life, including members of the Order of Canada, the Order of Ontario, and community volunteers, to form a human flag on centre ice at Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens). Renowned Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky will capture this grand undertaking, and the image will be the focal point of an art exhibition at the Lieutenant Governor’s Suite that will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 2017. The event promises to be a wonderful opportunity to mingle with friends old and new in a historic setting. What better place to celebrate our national flag than in a legendary hockey rink! The iconic photograph taken will represent what we as a people stand for – diversity, strength, and peace. Le mois prochain, nous fêterons le 50e anniversaire du drapeau canadien. Dans de nombreuses collectivités du pays, des citoyens se rassembleront pour commémorer ce symbole national qui nous tient à cœur. Le Bureau de la lieutenante-gouverneure de l’Ontario soulignera cette occasion très spéciale de façon tout à fait unique. En effet, nous invitons les Ontariens, tous horizons confondus, y compris les membres de l’Ordre du Canada, de l’Ordre de l’Ontario et les bénévoles communautaires, à former un drapeau humain au centre de la patinoire du Mattamy Athletic Centre (autrefois le Maple Leaf Gardens). Le grand photographe canadien, Edward Burtynsky, immortalisera ce magnifique moment. Cette photographie sera la pièce centrale d’une exposition d’art qui aura lieu dans les appartements de la lieutenante-gouverneure afin de célébrer le 150e anniversaire de la Confédération du Canada, en 2017. Cet évènement promet d’être une extraordinaire occasion d’échanger dans un cadre historique avec les vieux amis, comme avec les nouveaux. Il n’y a pas de meilleur endroit pour célébrer notre drapeau national qu’une patinoire de hockey légendaire! La photographie emblématique qui sera prise représentera à merveille ces valeurs qui sont les nôtres : la diversité, la force, et la paix.
