EPIROTES NOT DAUNT ED BY GREECE’S PROBLEMS

Despite the mounting troubles in Greece these days, the board of the World Council of Epirotes Abroad has decided to hold its international convention in Ioannina, the capitol of Epiros, as scheduled the weekend of July 29-30.
“We know that some groups have cancelled events in Greece because of the country’s mounting economic problems and the growing demonstrations against the austerity measures imposed on the Greek people as a result,” said World Council President Chrysostomos Dimou, “but we feel it is crucial to show solidarity with the people of Epiros in these difficult times. And we will hold our convention in Yannina as scheduled”
“I was in Yannina a few weeks ago, and it’s as calm and safe there as any American city I know, probably a lot safer,” said Nicholas Gage, who is honorary president of the organization. “Besides, Epirotes from abroad have always supported their homeland, and we’re certainly not going to let it down now.” He noted that most of the major institutions established in Greece after the country won its independence were financed by Epirotes who prospered abroad and used their fortunes to help rebuild their homeland.
Mr. Dimou said some 100 delegates are expected at the convention representing Epirote groups in the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and Australia. “Some expected delegates have called to express concern about the troubles in Greece but no one has said they were canceling because of them,” Mr. Dimou said. “That’s not how Epirotes are.”
The convention will be held at the beautiful, new Grand Serai Hotel in the heart of the city with its Olympic-size pool, magnificent health spa and luxurious accommodations.
“In the past, many who came for the convention stayed on after it to enjoy the many beautiful sights of Epiros, including the cleanest beaches in the Mediterranean, and visit its unique landmarks,” said Mr. Gage, “and we expect this year will be no different. Greece has had many ups and downs during its long history, but its magic never fades.”
Mr. Dimous said that besides delegates Epirotes or their friends from other parts of Greece who want to attend as observers, will be welcomed and may obtain information about the convention by contacting in the US Demetris Koutoulas @ 508-317-6478 or panepirotic@gmail.com.
