Οικονομική κρίση που ξέσπασε­­­ πριν περίπου δύο χρόνια, είναι βαθειά και συνεχίζεται. Οιπερισσότερες χώρες στον κόσμο υποφέρουν από αυτή την οικονομική κρίση. Ο Καναδάς φαίνεται, ότι είναι η πρώτη χώρα η οποία αρχίζει να βγαίνει από αυτή την οικονομική κρίση. Η Ελλάδας μας υποφέρει πολύ. Ο Μακαριώτατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αθηνών και πάσης Ελλάδος κ. Ιερώνυμος, πρόσφατα ανεκοίνωσε, ότι τα συσσίτια για τους φτωχούς στην Αρχιεπισκοπή Αθηνών διπλασιάστηκαν. Από 5.000 έγιναν 10.000.

Όλοι μας μιλούμε για την οικονομική αυτή κρίση, αλλά οι περισσότεροι μιλάμε θεωρητικά. Πώς όμως αισθάνονται οι άνθρωποι αυτοί, οι οποίοι αναγκάζονται να καταφύγουν στα συσσίτια; Μπορούν οι έχοντες, οι πλούσιοι δηλαδή, και οι κυβερνώντες, να νιώσουν τους ανθρώπους αυτούς; Πιστεύω όχι. Μόνον όταν κανείς βρεθεί στην ίδια κατάσταση, τότε νιώθει τον άλλο ο οποίος υποφέρει.

Γιατί όμως, έφθασαν τα πράγματα εκεί; Ο πλανήτης μας έχει ακόμη πολλά αγαθά να θρέψει όλους τους ανθρώπους που ζουν επάνω στη γη και περισσότερους ακόμη. Και γεωργικά προϊόντα έχει, που είναι απαραίτητα για την τροφή των ανθρώπων, αλλά και ορυκτά προϊόντα έχει. Τότε γιατί υπάρχει αυτή η οικονομική κρίση; Ήλθε μόνη της; Κατέβηκε απ’ τον ουρανό ή υπάρχουν βαθύτερα αίτια;

Χωρίς αμφιβολία υπάρχουν βαθύτερα αίτια και πρέπει να ιδούμε ποια είναι τα αίτια αυτά.

Το βασικό αίτιο είναι η κακή διαχείριση (management), η κακή διοίκηση. Ας το ερευνήσουμε λιγάκι αυτό.

Χωρίς να γενικεύουμε, οι κυβερνήσεις των εθνών, οι διοικήσεις των μεγάλων επιχειρήσεων, οι διοικήσεις των ιδρυμάτων, πολλές φορές δεν ενδιαφέρονται για την χώρα, για την επιχείρηση, για τον λαό γενικά. Ενδιαφέρονται περισσότερο για τους εαυτούς τους. Την δύναμη και την εξουσία την οποία έχουν, δεν την ενεργούν σαν υπηρεσία προς τον λαό, όπως είναι το σωστό. Την χρησιμοποιούν για να καταδυναστεύουν τον λαό. Πολλές φορές, ό,τι ανήκει στον λαό το καρπώνονται οι ίδιοι. Και ο λαός υποφέρει. Το ίδιο πολλές φορές συμβαίνει με τις διοικήσεις επιχειρήσεων, οργανισμών, ιδρυμάτων.

Όταν οι ιθύνοντες ενεργούν κατ’ αυτόν τον τρόπο, αποδεικνύουν, ότι δεν έχουν ηθικό έρισμα. Δεν έχουν τιμιότητα. Δεν έχουν ειλικρίνεια. Δεν είναι, αν θέλετε, φιλάνθρωποι. Δεν είναι αλτρουιστές. Αγαπούν τον εαυτό τους περισσότερο από οτιδήποτε άλλο.

Όταν έτσι ενεργούν οι διοικούντες γενικά, τι κάμνει ο λαός; Δυστυχώς, οι πολλοί παραδειγματίζονται από τους διοικούντες και ξεχνούν κάθε ηθική και τιμιότητα. Οι κυβερνήτες ενός κράτους αρπάζουν ό,τι μπορούν για τους εαυτούς τους; Ο λαός κάμνει το ίδιο. Κρατεί τα πάντα για τον εαυτό του, δεν πληρώνει τους φόρους και η χώρα πτωχεύει.

Αν η κοινωνία, ο λαός, ξεχάσει τον Θεό, ξεχάσει την ηθική, ξεχάσει την τιμιότητα, ξεχάσει την αλήθεια, ξεχάσει τον αλτρουισμό και κυριευθεί από τη φιλαυτία, η κοινωνία θα γίνει ζούγκλα. Ο ένας θα τρώει τον άλλο.

Η οικονομική κρίση είναι συνέπεια της ηθικής κρίσης. Για να βγούμε απ΄την οικονομική κρίση πρέπει πρώτα να βγούμε από την ηθική κρίση. Να επιστρέψουμε στο Θεό. Να σκεπτόμαστε όχι μόνο την γη, αλλά και τον ουρανό. Δηλαδή να σκεπτόμαστε, όχι μόνο την παρούσα ζωή, αλλά και την μετά θάνατον. Έχομε πάρει μεγάλη ηθική και οικονομική κατρακύλα. «Στώμεν καλώς, στώμεν μετά φόβου».

Ο Θεός μας χαρίζει ένα καινούργιο χρόνο. Ας φροντίσουμε στο χρόνιο αυτό να μετανοήσουμε. Να επιστρέψουμε στον Θεό. Στην Αλήθεια. Στην ηθική. Στην τιμιότητα. Στον αλτρουισμό. Έτσι μόνο θα βγούμε, πρώτα από την ηθική κρίση και ύστερα και από την οικονομική κρίση. Πλούσια είναι τα αγαθά του Θεού επί της γης. Ανάξιοι, ανήθικοι και κακοί, πολλοί από τους διοικούντες αυτά. Να μη ξεχνά όμως κανένας, ότι ο Θεός τους «κακούς κακώς απολέσει αυτούς».

Εύχομαι σε όλους ο καινούργιος χρόνος να είναι ευτυχής, ευλογημένος από τον Θεό και να βγούμε γρήγορα από την ηθική και οικονομική αυτή κρίση.

New Year’s Message

he Economic crisis that erupted about two years ago is deep and it continues. Most countries in the world suffer from this economic crisis. Canada appears to be the first country that is now emerging from this economic crisis. Greece is suffering a lot. His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece recently announced that the soup kitchens for the poor in the Archdiocese of Athens have doubled from 5,000 to 10,000.

We all talk about this economic crisis, but most people talk in theory rather than substance. Have we ever asked how those people who are forced to resort to soup kitchens feel? Can the rich and those who have material wealth to spare, as well as those in Government truly empathize and understand these people who are in need of the basic necessities of life? I think not. Only when one is found in the same situation, can one feel the pain of the other who suffers.

But why have things gotten to this sorry state? Our planet Earth still has many material goods and resources to feed everyone living on this earth and many more. It has agricultural products that are needed to feed people, as well as mineral resources that can be processed. So why are we in this financial crisis? Did it develop on its own? Did it descend from the sky or there deeper causes?

Without a doubt, there are deeper causes and we should study to see what these causes are.

The main cause is poor management and poor administration. Let's explore these causes more carefully.

Without generalizing, the governments of nations; administrators of large companies; administrations of other institutions - often do not care about the country they are doing business in, the company they work for, or for the people employed with them in general. Rather, they are more interested in themselves. The power and authority which they possess, are not channeled towards the people as a service to benefit their needs, as it should be. Instead, they use this power they possess to oppress the people. Many times, that which belongs to the people is hoarded by these governments and business leaders, and only they reap their benefits. The end result will be that the people suffer. The same thing often happens with the administrations of business enterprises, organizations, and charitable institutions.

When leaders act in this selfish way, they only show that they do not possess any moral compass or business ethics. They do not have any integrity. They are not honourable. They are not, if you will, philanthropists. They are not altruistic. They love themselves more than anything else.

When these business and community leaders act in such a selfish and unprofessional manner, what do the people under them do? Unfortunately, many of them will take their example from these managers, and in so doing, they forget all about ethics and honesty. Is it right for those in leadership and in any given Government to govern only to benefit themselves, grabbing whatever they can for themselves? When leaders of Governments do this, then the people will see this, and do exactly the same. They keep everything for themselves; they refuse to pay taxes; and in this manner, they can bankrupt the country, which grows even more poorer.

If society in general and people in it forget God; forget ethics; forget honesty; forget the truth; forgot how to be altruistic and allow themselves to be dominated by selfishness – then this society will become a jungle. One will eat the other.

The economic crisis is the result of moral crisis. In order for us to get out of the economic crisis, we must first get out of the moral crisis we find ourselves in. We need to return back to God. We must not concentrate solely on the material things of this earth, but more importantly, we must seek after and concentrate on the blessings of eternity in Heaven. That is to say, we should not only think about this life, but we must also think about and prepare for life after death. We have chosen a great immoral and economic decline. As we sing in the Divine Liturgy, "Let us stand well, let us stand with fear."

God grants us another New Year as a divine gift from above. Let us ensure that we use this time to repent and to return back to God. Let us choose and embrace Truth; morality; honesty; and altruism. Only in this way will we first get out from the moral crisis and then out of the present financial crisis. Truly rich and manifold are the resources and the blessings of God upon the earth. However, most unworthy, immoral and evil are many of these leaders and governments who hoard and squander these same resources that benefit only themselves and not their people. However, let no one forget that God "will destroy those who are evil."

My prayer for every person is that each of you has a blessed and Happy New Year, and that we may all quickly get out of this moral and economic crisis.
