Join us for Yia Mas ~ Greek Dancing and the Art of Kefi, Cretan edition
Kefi // κέφι ~ loosely defined as "fun," a vibration that one can only experience. Joy in the MOMENT.
Join us for our second Yia Mas all about Greek dance, movement, and music. For this second NYC edition we'll explore it through the lens of Cretan dance! The island of Crete is known for it's unique style of dancing. These dances are upbeat, the music is stunning, and the history is ancient.
Equal parts experiential and informative, we'll explore Greek dancing through many angles. From the ancient Greek choros to the ecstatic summer panigyri to formal presentations of Greek dance as laografia/folk dance, Greek dancing has a rich history. On this evening we'll merge the ancient and present day by paying homage to the traditions, instruments, and rich cultural history of Hellenic dance and music. We'll also discuss (and experience) how movement and community are scientifically proven keys to health, something our ancestors were onto without the empirical evidence.
After a presentation, we'll warm up our bodies with breath and mindful movement, then learn and enjoy some dancing! This is very much for ALL LEVELS. The night is more about getting into your body and the music than perfecting the steps.
Yia mas is short for "στην υγειά μας" / "stin yeia mas" means "to our health" or "cheers" ~ Στην υγειά μας, to our health!
Our teachers for the evening:
Niko Paterakis ~ Niko is a Greek composer based in NYC. His early work for performing arts as a multi-instrumentalist was featured at SXSW Festival and sponsored by ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND. He was awarded a scholarship to study for a Master’s Degree in Film Scoring at Berklee Valencia (Berklee College of Music – Valencia, ES). Niko moved to New York to work for ROLI, a thriving music tech start-up. Since moving to New York, he has been composing for libraries and short film projects, as well as founding and managing KÍKLOS FESTIVAL in 2018 under the auspices of the Consulate General of Greece in New York.
Kristina Headrick ~ Kristina is the founder of Yia Mas and Delphi Reclaimed. She has danced her entire life, and has formal training in ballet and Greek dance. Alongside dance and singing, she grew up performing with the Hampton Roads Greek Dancers locally and at competitions around the US. She continues to perform, attends workshops on Greek dance around the country, in Montreal, and has done "field work" at many a panigyri. She continued her movement studies in adulthood with over 300 hours of yoga and meditation training. She's on a mission to elevate Hellenic consciousness around the globe and spread her love of Greek movement and music.
The Yia Mas event series explores health, community, and consciousness as connected to Hellenism.
