Dear friends!
Greek Cultural Center (GCC) and the project ′′ Foreigners in the City ′′ invite you to a author's tour dedicated to the Greek heritage in the Russian capital. On a pedestrian walk in the center of the capital, we will see Greek architecture, which reflected the Moscow buildings of the XIX century. Let's remember the close Russian-Byzantine religious and cultural relations. Finally, let's talk about the Greeks of different professions who came to Russia in the XVII-XIX centuries and find out where they lived and what overseas guests did.
A vivid example of close religious contacts of Muscovy and Greek monasteries was the transfer of the icon of Virgin Iverskaya in 1648, one of their main relics of Athos. The icon was written at the request of Nikon, the future patriarch, the famous Greekophile. In gratitude to the Iverskaya Brotherhood in 1654, the Nikolas monastery, which has since been named Nicolo-Greek. The monks were given a number of privileges, such as monthly content from the Patriarchal courtyard.
Another vivid example of the cultural heritage of the Greeks in Moscow was the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy. Two Greek monks stood at the origins of the first Russian university, which gave us Lomonosov and other outstanding scientists. Brothers Johnny and Sofronius Lihuda arrived in Moscow in 1685 and opened their famous school first in the Bogoyavlensky monastery, and two years later moved to Zaikonospassky.
